pop ups

And this couldn't have been pmd?

We don't have pop ups. If you mean the one that takes over the page, ant man or something today, there were issues with it that should have been fixed. It is meant to be 1 or 2 per 24 hours.

There is a rogue advert on ipads and I phones called motor trade that we keep fighting off but they keep returning.

If something is playing up I need to know specifically what it is. I don't see why a thread has to be started though, a simple pm would be fine.

It's been a shit day for issues though so maybe I'm just feeling tired and grumpy.

The long and short is we either take him premium adverts available or the business closes down though. The recession has nearly crucified my business partner and me, if we can't pay ourselves back for the major investments we've made and the drops in income we've suffered, then.......

It isn't some rogue extension is it Lord Ron? Every so often sites you visit can add extensions you don't know you have got it. Though I have every type of anti virus/firewall etc. they can add themselves sneakily.

Just go to tools in your menu, and check extensions. often as not something added itself that shouldn't be there. Might no be. Just thought I would mention it.

I had 1 the other day and I had to completely reset Google as it wasn't in extensions, control panel or anywhere. They can be sneaky little sh*ts

Yes the motor trend app is terrible, whenever I'm on my phone I can barely use this site as that ad is so big and can't be closed down. Other than that no problems from me

Is that still happening david? It's meant to have been cleared but it's been a major pain (not just on or for Vital) as every time they track and block, it comes back again.

Heaven knows what will happen re monitising mobiles. We've (industry wide) all seen traffic go from close to 100% desktop (and laptop) traffic (easy to have adverts on, right size etc) to 50/50 with tablets and mobiles. Tablets you can monitise similar or the same as desktops because they are a decent size but to make mobiles pay is going to be the key.

Obviously if you think about it, you go from 100% able to make it pay to 50% payable and 50% unknown and (again industry wide) you're on shaky ground!

I think the way it should have been done is you have an entry page for mobile where there is a full page advert, that sort of 'earns' your way into the site. Then after 1 hour or whatever, another etc. But what do I know!?

Sorry I was grumpy Lord Ron, and thanks for the pm. Was one of those days for me I'm afraid.

I use this site on my iphone and i have no problems whatsoever tbh anything that pops up i close etc in fact this site for me is easier than most to use,,,,,only thing i struggle with is i have to keep zoomin the threads to reading them cos om feckin half blind so can you sort that out for me Fear mate cheers!!! lol

Haven't had a pop up in ages??? And I'm here daily?

LRS - as JF says, PM or email with a screenprint if you can mate.

Clive there isn't an app for you mate - you're special on your own and loved! lol

Fingers crossed it's gone... although these buggers often make a return. Frustrating for our agency as well as we have to chase them all the time but they haven't sanctioned crap like that either. Wouldn't be quite so bad if at the very least it was premium £ payment for them!

A "Bet365" pop up has now stopped me going on the vital Villa home page because I do find it irritating.

To be fair, it is the only one I get on here.

Thanks for that advice thefacehead, it's what will send networks like this bust!

Seriously, you don't walk into a shop and take things for nothing surely? Free sites = putting up with adverts.

TH... we don't have pop ups... pop ups are extra windows that literally pop up (pop unders go 'under' an open page)

Bet 365? What did it do? Why wasn't it possible to just click off it and continue? Was it on the phone or...? What was so bad about it (serious question)

Folks, modern world, sites cost money to run, sites want to make money, if you have to click an advert off, in the bigger scheme of things (not just on vital - and lets be honest, have you seen some on the newspaper sites, they are 10 times worse) is it really that difficult?

Not talking about rogue adverts or broken/faulty ones we have to get rid of after tracking (or repair if bust) but have to be honest, unless I get multi sound on (and sound on are an issue we always try to hunt down) I don't find it a stress at all clicking a sites adverts and clicking off what I need to.

I guess the thing I'm asking unless it behaved abnormally (and not just on vital, but on other sites you use) is it that hard / bad an advert which 'pays your way' on whatever page, to not go on that page or site?

It's a genuine question, it's one we have to grapple with, stickiness (you go on one page, you go on another then another ... or you read one thing and click off etc) is very important to a network like this.

(in case of any misunderstanding, none of the above is said aggressively, ad blocker especially though, IS something that could send us and many others bust)

Doubt it mate, all that will happen is that sites will have a disclaimer to say it will bypass your ad-blocker etc, because advertising is important to those advertising otherwise why would they bother, so it's in their interest to work around it.

Sorry that I upset you, I'm sure you fast forward through adverts on Sky + don't you? Not exactly sent ITV bust has it?

Thing is, I've worked in this industry 14 years, I know the industry and I know the trials and tribulations. What I say holds correct, adblocker and users using it will send independent small companies bust as it affects ctr which is an important metric. So you can doubt it all you want my good man, it's fact.

Have you seen the difference in funding for a massive company like ITV? BUT yes, it is affecting them and it is one of the reasons a lot of advertising is moving to online, however adblocker and crap like that will push it back away.

These sites (not talking just Vital) aren't free. No one wants to pay for them, hence you take adverts to pay OUR way...

As said before, people don't walk into shops and expect the service/goods for free. People shouldn't online either.

Trust me, many a sleepless night has been spent trying to get through this recession and provide this service. As said, telling people to use adblocker and/or using adblocker is - to me - just bad ...! Bad for me anyway.

As said, I just can't see how a few adverts can be so inconvenient for people, even if you do have to click the odd cross to get rid. Compared to real hardships or problems in life, a few adverts hardly registers.

Not really asking opinions on this, I know full well the impact (and to be clear, I'm not talking about you individually, just generally how shite adblocker and other blockers are for this industry... maybe one day we'll end up with just big corporations running sites because they could afford to keep them going... that'll be ace)

It's simple really. Either put up with the ads or pay membership to keep the site running. The ads are what make this site free. Anyway one of these ads pointed me in the right direction for life insurance and I'm glad it did.
