Pochettino: Tottenham must spend to be in the title shake-up

Mauricio Pochettino fears Tottenham will not be able to challenge for the Premier League title unless he makes signings who can force Harry Kane, Dele Alli and other key players to raise their games.

"Difficult summer"

Mauricio Pochettino: 'I spoke to Alvaro Morata but he just said, "Why do you want me if you have Harry Kane?"'

‘It’s so difficult to convince good players to come and then be on the bench. Then the problems start,’ he says before revealing details of a conversation with Alvaro Morata, who joined Chelsea from Real Madrid last month.

‘Morata said to me, “Why do you want me if you have Harry Kane?”. You know, if you go to try to sign a striker, they will say, “Eh gaffer, you want me for what? To be on the bench? Because it’s Harry Kane, I can’t compete with Harry Kane” or Hugo Lloris or different players.

So he is finally saying what most of us have been saying. Plus, a couple of us even said good players wont come and sit on the bench in a WC year.

Does he have faith that vinny can replace kane for a spell if he ever got injured, im not to sure.

Yep, he's really only saying what we already new and what we've been saying here for some time; that means we have to concentrate on players that have not yet 'made the top-class grade' - this now makes our buying strategy absolutely crystal clear even for those who still don't or won't understand it..

Interestingly, Poch also says that Danny-boy is dead keen to get new players in...

‘Daniel is very keen’ – Pochettino shares fascinating Levy stance on potential new Tottenham
2nd August, 2017, 8:15 AM

By Harry Sykes

Mauricio Pochettino has insisted that Daniel Levy is not holding Tottenham back in the transfer market this summer.

Spurs are the only Premier League side not to make new signings in the current window despite being strongly linked with the likes of Everton playmaker Ross Barkley.

Long-standing chairman Levy has a reputation as a hard-headed negotiator who is not willing to overspend and would rather pull out of a deal than pay even slightly over the odds.

Tottenham have kept their powder dry to date this summer, while their title rivals have spent vast sums, with Manchester City spending £217million, United £165million and Chelsea £131million.

Pochettino denied that Levy was the key factor in the absence of any new signings, as he delivered some fascinating insight into how the White Hart Lane chief operates behind the scenes.

“That is a very wrong perception,” said the Argentinean of Levy’s seeming reluctance to spend, as quoted by the Mirror. “In three years, my experience with Daniel has always been trying to find a player to improve the squad.

“The difference is were they the right or wrong signing? But I think Daniel is very keen to sign every season in my experience.

“When I first came, the transfer discussions were with Franco Baldini and then later Paul Mitchell. We have a lot of meetings, spontaneous meetings, talking every day on the training ground. I think we are all involved in the process, Daniel included.

“Of course the last decision is between Daniel and me if we sign the player. But we are all involved in the process to try to find the right player for us. But the thing is Daniel is very keen to sign players like me.”

Pochettino has insisted that Tottenham will bring in new recruits before the transfer window cut-off at the end of the month.

Pochettino on why Kane, Alli & co need to feel threatened and his Spurs transfer promise

The Spurs manager has been talking about trophies and the transfer window

Tottenham Hotspur's star names need to feel their places are under threat at the club, reckons manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs have one of the best starting XIs in the league and it is one that has been very settled in recent seasons - in both a positive and negative way.

Most opponents could name Pochettino's strongest XI before they take to the field, but whether they can stop them is another thing.

The other cloud hanging over Tottenham - much like England's 'golden generation' of Beckham, Gerrard, Scholes, Lampard et al - is that they need to win trophies to fulfil their massive potential and also to potentially stop the squad from breaking apart in future summers.

“That is like the chicken or the egg," said Pochettino. "Three years ago I hear ‘we must play Champions League, if not it’s difficult to keep our best players’. And now, we have achieved in the last two seasons the Champions League.

"Right, now [I hear] we need to win some trophies, no? That is good, the pressure. I think it’s important to understand now that we need to be clever how we manage the expectation and how we need to put pressure on our own players.

Harry Kane needs to be pushed reckons Mauricio Pochettino

"We understand that Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, Dier, Alderweireld, different players are really good players. They want to win, like us. But it’s true that they need to feel the pressure a little bit to improve in every season.

"How have Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and different clubs tried to improve their season? Bringing players and trying to put more pressure on their star players, their key players - and for us we need to do that too."

Tottenham play Juventus at Wembley this Saturday in their final pre-season friendly, without any new faces among the squad.

The Spurs boss knows that the club needs to break its duck in the transfer market this summer, mostly in order to ensure the current set of players are out of their comfort zone so they feel their places are under threat if they don't perform.

"Every season we need to be clever in how we bring more energy and make sure our main players are not in a comfortable situation – because if not it is normal in human beings. If I’m Dele Alli and look behind me and there’s no-one for competition, if I make a run or two runs it’s the same because I always play," Pochettino explained.

"When the players start to feel that, if the team starts to feel that, it’s difficult to win because we need more motivation from every single player. That is a big risk. To create a winning team and try to win trophies, you need to feel the pressure.

"If I’m Harry Kane, like Dele Alli or Eriksen, if there’s no competition in behind it’s normal to drop your motivation, it’s normal to drop everything that you do. If some players arrive with different energy then it’s ‘ok, come on, we need to push, we need to run, we need to do the same’."

He added: "That is the risk we will have in the future. If we only keep 11 players and they know they always play. I think the best example was to bring in, when we arrived, Ben Davies to push Danny Rose, Kieran Trippier to push Kyle Walker.

"We need quality and players with the facility to fight with our number one, and to try to help them push their level. That is the key. If we’re capable of doing this, it’s sure we will have success.

"In this moment we are finding the balance because it’s true that now is the moment to maybe refresh the team with some new faces – and it’s sure that will happen."

Tottenham will not compete for the Premier League title unless they sign players to rival Harry Kane and Dele Alli, says Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs are yet to bring in any signings this summer after finishing runners up to champions Chelsea last season, but have seen Kyle Walker leave for Manchester City - who finished third - for £50m.
'Morata put off Spurs by Kane'

Mauricio Pochettino says Alvaro Morata turned down Tottenham because he feared playing back-up to Harry Kane

Pochettino has already admitted Spurs cannot match the record fees being spent by the teams who finished around them in the 2016-17 campaign, but insists the performances of his side's best players will suffer if the club do not bring in players that can force them to raise their game.

"How have Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and different clubs tried to improve their season?" Pochettino said. "Bringing players and trying to put more pressure on their star players, their key players - and for us we need to do that too.

"If there's no competition in behind it's normal to drop your motivation, it's normal to drop everything that you do. And then it's difficult to win."

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has insisted the club will not sign a player this summer unless they are convinced he can make a difference to the squad, describing the £100m-plus spending from Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea as "totally unsustainable".

Tottenham record-signing Moussa Sissoko started just eight Premier League games last season

Spurs broke their own transfer record to sign Moussa Sissoko for £30m last year, who has so far started just eight Premier League games for the club, but Pochettino remains faithful to Levy's transfer policy.

"We are finding the balance because now is the moment to maybe refresh the team with some new faces - and it's sure that will happen," Pochettino added. "In three years, my experience with Daniel has always been trying to find a player to improve. The difference is were they the right or wrong signing?

"The problem is so clear. We are not a club today that can compete with Manchester United and City for a player. We cannot fight. We are in a different way.

"But the thing is Daniel is very keen to sign like me. These type of player we are talking about they are not easy to find."

And Poch also makes it clear that we sold Walker for 'sporting reasons' i.e. he was the best he was ever going to get and may we have better - I can't say I agree, but it's his shout..

Tottenham have had the best of Kyle Walker, according to Mauricio Pochettino.

The 27-year-old England right-back has just joined Manchester City in a deal that could reach £54million. But Spurs boss Pochettino believes the Londoners got the jet-heeled star in his prime.

“He’s one of the best full-backs in England and Manchester City have paid a lot of money – £50million – just like they have signed different players to try to get success in the future,” said Pochettino.

“But, for me, I think we have seen the best of Kyle with Tottenham.

“We helped him improve and learn. When you pay this type of amount for a player, it’s because he’s top and because you are at your best. Then it’s normal that he will succeed. It’s a big pressure because when you pay for some players, the pressure to perform as well in every game becomes greater.

“It will be different, the pressure, for him. But there is no doubt that he is a quality player, a talented player. And there is no doubt that he will succeed with Manchester City.”

Pochettino also revealed there are no hard feelings between the pair, despite rumours of a bust-up prior to Walker’s departure.

Pochettino: We NEED quality signings to keep current stars on their toes — and we'll make them

Walker sent Pochettino a “Thank you” message with a heart emoji.

“We never had a problem. Never,” insisted the boss.

Pochettino confesses he is a 24/7 boss, who drives his wife crazy because he can’t switch off from football.

Even when the Argentinian, 45, goes on holiday or back to his other home in Barcelona, he can’t tear himself away from football.

“Switching off is a difficult thing to do,” he said. “My wife always complains.

"It doesn’t matter where we are, in Barcelona or wherever, I’m always with the phone or with Jesus Perez, my assistant or the chairman. It’s not like an office when you close the door, go home and switch off. It is 24-hour.

“Maybe some people switch off, but, for me, it’s impossible. Only when I’m sleeping.

“When you’re at home and some game is on – World Cup, Champions League, Premier League, Championship or League One – it’s like a happiness to watch football.

“At lunch or dinner, football could be on the TV. Maybe you don’t plan to watch, but you hear ‘Goal!’ and you’re ‘Oh!’ and looking for the TV. You’re happy, but your wife is not! My two sons love football and it is three against one!

"My poor wife.”

I don't think that Walker can't further improve or he can't continue to perform at the current level for another 2-3 years.

On the other hand, getting 54m for a right back is a very good price and good business by the owners given that Spurs don't aim officially in winning titles and trophies.
And that will continue to be the case until Spurs will have new owners.

LOL!

Let's just ignore our continuous improvement.

A sporting decision apart from a huge fee with Walker at his peak and City desperate for a RB. Kyle getting a huge pay rise is financial, him winning medals is sporting but not in our favour. Kyle moving closer to his family is personal , not sporting.

If we were as strong without him with good back up it's a good sporting decision, but we ain't.

At this stage I see Dier as back up to Trippier, not KWP.

Said the same the day we sold Walker NRD. To be fair Dier is quite good at RB and has a decent cross on him. Shame he doesn't have the athleticism to play as a wing back.

Read the first sentence of the second paragraph of the quote I have taken from post #2 in this thread ....... and then think about Sissoko.

Hands up who believes the last sentence of the quote.
