Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has this afternoon taken aim at UEFA for the strict nature of their restrictions on home-grown players.
Explanation

The rules for both the Champions League and Europa League state that competing teams must have a minimum of 8 locally-trained players in their squad, with the remaining 17 spots allocated to foreign players.

As a result of the limitations enforced by European football’s administrative body, Spurs midfielder Eric Dier has been listed as a foreign player, despite having been born in England and representing the Three Lions at international level.

The 23-year-old’s move to Portugal as a 7-year-old and subsequent 9 years spent with Sporting CP’s youth academy mean he is not listed as home-grown according to UEFA’s criteria.

This criteria states that association-trained players must have been:

‘Registered with a club or with other clubs affiliated to the same association as that of his current club for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or of 36 months between the ages of 15 and 21.’

In addition, Welsh defender Ben Davies, who is listed as homegrown by the Premier League, does not fit into this category.

As a result, Tottenham have been forced to leave Argentinian winger Erik Lamela out of their initial 25-man Champions League panel, meaning the former AS Roma man will not be eligible to line out for the North Londoners in their group stage fixtures.
‘Unbelievable’

Spurs manager Mauricio Pocehttino has today spoken out against UEFA’s restrictions, explaining:

‘It’s true that our problem was to have had 19 players that did not count as home-grown for the Champions League squad [including Lamela and Janssen]. It’s unbelievable that Eric Dier is not home-grown when he’s playing for England. That is so strange, no? It kills a little bit our possibilities.’ (via the Guardian)

Tottenham’s Champions League senior squad: Goalkeepers Lloris, Vorm, Gazzaniga. Defenders Trippier, Aurier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Sánchez, Foyth, Rose, Davies. Midfielders Dier, Dembélé, Wanyama, Eriksen, Sissoko, Nkoudou. Forwards Kane, Alli, Son, Llorente.

Them the rules

Neither of the two left out will be a miss for one thing or another.
