Mauricio Pochettino has denied that Chelsea managed Antonio Conte introduced any radical tactical changes to the league this year, and has instead insisted that the Chelsea boss has just been using a system ‘created’ by Pochettino for Spurs last year.
Today’s Evening Standard carries quotes from the Argentine where he explains how Chelsea’s formation this season is similar to Tottenham’s favoured system from last year, which saw Eric Dier drop between the centre backs and the full backs push forward regularly.
The former Espanyol manager is certainly correct that his side played a similar system last year, although he would also have to admit that football managers since the earliest forms of the game have experimented with similar systems. To deny that Conte invented anything new is fair enough; to follow that up by saying that on the other hand his own creation last year was totally original is…. odd.
