Plymouth

Much better 2nd half,after a poor opening 45!
We showed a lot more forward drive with purpose and urgency combined with a higher and more intense press to unsettle Plymouth and push them back for the majority. They responded later on and it became end to end in the latter stages and could've gone either way.

I thought Tilt had a decent game and Long impressed alongside him when he came on, especially with a couple of crucial blocks.Evans played well 2nd half and was a pivotal part of our improvement.

Another debatable decision seemed to cost us again though for the disallowed goal. The linesman has to be 100% sure that ball went out. It looked very close and he was miles away and possibly obstructed by the post.So I reckon he has guessed, which makes it a shocking decision! If he was so sure why did it take so long to come to a decision with the ref?

At least we have stopped the rot of defeats and have gained a point, but we have winnable games coming up now against teams around us,starting on Tuesday. So we need to take that 2nd half performance into it and start the game in a similar fashion!

Thats a fair assessment YAMS.

Wonder if Plymouth will be subject to an FA Charge for the way they tried to intimidate the Ref and Linesman when we scored our first goal !

Absolutely ! thought the ref was very weak ....having to wave them away three or four times....grow a pair you fkn great Mary Ellen and show a few cards ! ....pathetic showing.
Whether the ball had gone out I’ve no way of knowing but from the linesman’s position I very much doubt he could know for sure either....the ref clearly only disallowed it on his say so (and half the Plymouth team as well obvs) ....the soft tart

The EFL will probs charge us with playing to the whistle and dock us points ....!
From a v.fuzzy stream seemed to come back off the angle ?

Having now seen it on sky our lad did head it back but how the liner 10yds behind play can decide the ball was out is beyond me.
Cool finish by Evan's btw 😉

The next few League matches are against teams just below or above us, we need to beat some of these teams, otherwise we will be in real trouble and probably be in the relegation zone, more losses than wins and the odd draw is relegation form.

What's clear to me,these past few games is that the position we are really lacking in the most is a natural number 10(attacking midfielder). We only have young Aasguaard, who looked promising the other night and could play a part this season. But we do need 1 or 2 more experienced players who specialise in this position, hopefully once the takeover gets sorted. Gary Roberts would be one, once he is fit. Hopefully there are some other decent frees out there to choose from!

My opinion - where I will be constructive unlike some on here.

Jamie Jones does more good than bad and is keeping us in games. He’s getting accustomed to a different back four every week so mistakes will happen until we have a settled system for four or five games. Unfortunately mistakes are being punished at the moment.

Individually the defence looks good- it’s a learning thing. Great to see Adam Long doing so well.

Midfield is excellent when Lee Evans is driving it. There have been moments when misplaced passes have grown into periods of frustration. Lee needs to really take control then, we know he can. Getting experience in there is good, the kids have been overwhelmed a couple of times but their time will come. I think Massey is growing into the player he was, he just needs to cut out the extravagant passes.

Solomon is our flair player and losing him shook things up for 45 minutes. Kal causes problems every time he puts the ball into the box. If he does that four or five times in a game, we will get goals. He is too good for this division and I worry we will lose him in January.

Will Keane is growing in confidence- nice touches and a good partnership with Joe. Joe is playing like a captain and giving everything every game. Defences hate playing against him and he will score 20 this season.

I like the look of Long, Merrie, Perry and Askgard, their time will come. Charlie Jolley needs to come on for 10-15 minutes with the instructions to shoot on sight and he will bag a few.

More than anything they need a bit of time to gel and we will do OK this year. We need to be patient and not throw our fucking toys out of the pram when we make a mistake

In my opinion 😁

“ the kids have been overwhelmed a couple of times but their time will come...”

FFS - Alex Perry and Chris Merrie are 22 and 21 (soon to be 22) years old respectively - they are not Kids and deserve to play significant minutes in the first team in order to develop their full potential!.

From what I have seen so far, both of these lads are every bit as skilled as Matt Palmer (25 years old) but are probably on a fraction of Matt’s wages !.

As Matt is on loan from a competitor in our league and could well be off back to them in January, why should we give him all the first team match experience while our own lads are just warming the bench ? !.

My view is that over the next few weeks, when we have a glut of games on both Tuesdays and Saturdays, it would be a good thing if Sheridan rotated the playing time in midfield of Matt, Chris & Alex all playing alongside the very experienced Lee Evans. This would give Chris & Alex the experience they need, while ensuring there would be an easy transition if Matt goes back to Swindon in January.

In any event giving these two lads (and other youth team players) more first team L1 “Appearances“ will only increase their value in case any other “vulture teams” come swooping in the January transfer window !.

From what I’ve seen these lads have the skill and commitment to go far and they should be rotated in the first team to gain that extra experience. For me it is surely a win-win situation for both the young lads and for Wigan Athletic FC !

The time to give these lads more first team minutes is definitely NOW and not some arbitrary time in the future !.

It just needs our management team to show some bloody initiative !.

Won’t disagree with any of that. But they were overrun against Charlton, so Sheridan made the right decision to put them on the bench until the ship steadies.

I want to see young players progressing but I think Sheridan and Richardson would be better judges than me

I am 59 - 22 is a kid 😁

After the dreadful first half we put in a decent shift in the second and deserved to probably win it. But same issues every week dreadful mistakes and only playing for patches in a game - often only after going behind. No side will win a game if they play with zero tempo, intensity, pressing and movement and that is too often what we do. These are not down to a lack of ability but a lack of application and players not taking responsibility.

Second half a few players stepped up to the plate particularly Lee Evans who for the first time this season looked like the player we all know he is at this level running the show. But the rest of the team had a go, they starting pressing, attacking in numbers, tried passing rather than lumping it and Plymouth were on the ropes. If t wasn't for bad luck with the lineman we would've won that.

I say the same every week - the league is shite if we turn up and play to a decent standard not even great just decent for 90 mins and cut out the school boy errors we will win most games despite having a makeshift team.

Got to say Massey continues to disapoint, think he goes hiding in games. I still think we'd get more out of Naismith either on his natural left side or even more centrally. Think Tilt was very good again. Our set piece delivery let's us down constantly.

If we can stop committing suicide at the back I don't think many teams are good enough to break us down with a good bit of play. So it's in our own hands and if we keep losing we only have ourselves to blame.

Ok- understood but look at all the “kids” playing in the Premier league and Antonee Robinson is only a year older than Alex & Chris - they can both play good football, they are not kids and are both as good as Matt.

Its time they were given more first team playing minutes !

Like you said, with the number of matches I am sure they will. Also sure they won’t let us down.
But we must expect the odd mistake. I think the group we have are good enough to battle through that. We might even find our way into the top 10

The team we started the season with, containing so many youngsters was never sustainable for to long. Players of their age cannot be expected to compete against more experienced players game after game when there are so many in the team.
Yes one or two at a time but not so many and in such pivotal positions as Perry and Merrie

I agree with KDZ that Naismith needs to be given a settled run in the central midfield spot, and I think Sheridan sees that. He started there against Plymouth but the unfortunate injury to Solomon-Otabor meant he was moved out to the wing as Keane replaced Viv.

I suspect he will be on the wing against MK Dons tomorrow night and it will be Keane and Garner up front. I hope , however, that we start the game on the front foot and press high against a team in a lower league position.

I said in a previous post that when we play higher and quicker paced we look a decent team, they need to believe in the players around them and up the pace giving Keane and Garner the opportunity to run onto the ball before the defence is set. Cut out the slow build up play and the sideways and back passing and concentrate on getting the ball forward quickly.
