we know by now that he's not the sharpest pencil in the pack, but for FFS is he really this stupid? He is an absolute embarrassment.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/england/11409860/Roy-Hodgson-admits-to-smoking-shisha-and-has-no-problems-with-Jack-Wilsheres-lifestyle.html

Roy Hodgson admits to smoking shisha and has no problems with Jack Wilshere's lifestyle
The England manager adds that he is not convinced shisha is harmful ahead of Wilshere's expected return for ars*nal against Middlesbrough on Sunday

Roy Hodgson has admitted to smoking shisha in his younger days
No smoke without fire: Roy Hodgson has admitted to smoking shisha in his younger days (artist's impression) Photo: TELEGRAPH SPORT

By Matt Law

10:30PM GMT 12 Feb 2015

Roy Hodgson has sympathised with Jack Wilshere over the midfielder’s latest smoking controversy by revealing that he too has puffed on a shisha pipe.

Arsène Wenger, the ars*nal manager, last week demanded an explanation from Wilshere after he was pictured holding a shisha pipe, having been caught smoking cigarettes on two previous occasions.

Hodgson, the England manager, is not worried by Wilshere’s lifestyle though and is not convinced shisha is harmful.

Wilshere has missed three months with an ankle injury, but is set to return to ars*nal’s squad for Sunday’s FA Cup clash against Middlesbrough.

“I thought tobacco was smoking and shisha pipes were water with flavour,” said Hodgson. “Does it [contain nicotine]? Are you sure about that? I am not.

“As an ex-cigar smoker when I tried it [shisha] I thought it was a complete nonsense, I couldn’t understand who would do it. Apart from a faint fruity taste in your mouth that was about the end of it.

“As far as I am concerned that is a club matter and Arsène dealt with it very, very well. If you are asking me, in an ideal world, is that an ideal thing to happen? Of course it isn’t, but we don’t live in an ideal world.

“I am happy it has been dealt with and it won’t occupy a lot of my time with Jack when I see him because we have a football match to win.

“I am more interested in working with him to get some performances out of him that he gave us in the autumn, which were outstanding. It’s a part of my life, but it’s an even bigger part of Arsène’s.”

A statement on the risks of smoking shisha on the British Heart Foundation website reads: “The average shisha-smoking session lasts an hour and research has shown that in this time you can inhale the same amount of smoke as from more than 100 cigarettes.

“Some people mistakenly think that shisha smoking is not addictive because the water used in the pipe can absorb nicotine. In reality, because only some of the nicotine is absorbed by the water, shisha smokers are still exposed to enough nicotine to cause an addiction.

“Shisha, herbal or otherwise, usually contains tobacco. Fruit or herbal flavours do not mean the product is healthy. Even if you use tobacco-free shisha, you’re still at risk from the carbon monoxide and any toxins in the coal or charcoal used to burn the shisha.”

Wilshere is not the only England player to have landed himself in hot water recently, as West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino was banned from driving for 12 months after admitting to drink driving.

Berahino was named in Hodgson’s England squad for the first time last November for the Euro 2016 qualifier against Slovenia and the friendly against Scotland.

Dan Ashworth, the Football Association director of elite development, who used to work for West Brom, wrote to Berahino to remind him of his responsibilities as an England player.

“It’s been dealt with,” said Hodgson. “He has been reprimanded and as far as we are concerned the matter is closed. It is up to him to put that behind him and show with his future behaviour that he has taken the reprimand on board.”

One of my biggest annoyances in life is people who talk about things with such assurance, when they really have no clue of the crap they are spouting.

Why is he even discussing this? Wilshire is injured and doesn't deserve a call up so whatever else has happened should be completely irrelevant.

I lost all interest in the England team the day he was appointed, I'm convinced Harry would have done a better job.

I lost all interest in the England team the day he was appointed, I'm convinced Harry would have done a better job.

the shame is Chiv, we probably have the best crop of potential top class players that really could compete than we've had in the last 30 years - but you just know Woy will bore them and us to death.

Hodgson was merely a safe pair of hands and an avoidance of anyone that might be slightly controversial. I have always liked the thought that he would be keeping the seat warm for someone better in an era when we were not expected to win or even compete for anything, whilst also doing the groundwork to allow the next generation to develop. Problem is that there still doesn't really seem to be many obvious English candidates, unless we wait that little longer and hope that someone like Southgate, Neville or Pardew really step up

I almost don't care who takes over from him, but I guess I hope it's Hoddle...with the crop of players we have now, he'd get us playing the sort of football at international level we'd warm to...

Trouble of course is his history.

I am reliably informed by a well informed source that Shisha has double the impact of that of a cigarette - surely if correct, he should be gone for spouting .... Hoddle ready to step in ...
