Player scores v Birmingham

Disjointed and disappointing but excellent spirit to snatch a point we didn't really deserve...feel free to post your scores, as always it's subjective.

Pants: 6, continues to look mediocre, is he really that much of an upgrade on Smith?

Byram: 6, less effective going forward and defensively than Darth Winker. Early days though.

Robinson: 6, well people got what they wanted and what they got was less defensive stability, misplaced passes, poor touch and he really slowed down our transitional play. Early days too though.

Fox: 7, not at his sharpest but still made some important tackles.

Figi: 6, he's looked rusty since coming into the team and that continued today. Time for Dawson...

Watson: 5, age looks to have really caught up with him, the game largely passed him by.

Colback: 7, worked hard in those small pockets of space, didn't have a huge impact but tried.

Cash: 7, busy and physical but not a huge creative outlet.

Dias: 7.5, probably our best player on the pitch, at times his thought was too quick for others.

Soundani: 6, just never happened for him.

Murphy: 7, fed off scraps and never quite was the focal point we needed. Hung in there though and got an important goal.

Osborn: 6, sporadic influence, energy but no real product.

Carvalho: 6.5, flashes of quality but didn't really impose himself.

Lolley: 8.5, I wanted some end product from him and today we got it with a fantastic strike to get us back into it.

We all see the game differently but alongside Watson and Murphy (goal aside) I thought Dias was one of the worst players today, lost the ball time and time again and every pass seemed to be misplaced. I thought Carvalho Lolley and Osborn all livened us up a bit, worrying that we dont seem to have a game plan other than hoof it to Murphy.

Foxz & Cashz were the only decent players once again we’ve got a point we didn’t deserve. Someone should explain to Maureen’s bestie the point of football is to win not to draw & defend.

Dias doesn't think quick enough . Keeps losing the ball as did soudani. Fig for me hasn't done enough to justify starting .

At times it was like watching a training session . I agree with cp on pants in goal as well and also fair play to cp for having the bottle to create this thread and get his opinion out there.

I actually thought Watson could be taken off before half time he was that bad. With grabban seemingly injured surely a striker on the way can't play Murphy in all games.

A late salvo from Joe Lolley and Daryl Murphy earned yet another point, and, here, the Post’s Barry Cooper marks the players out of 10.

Costel Pantilimon: Could do little about the opening goal which, in truth, was an expertly executed header. Was nowhere near Gary Gardner’s free-kick which whistled just wide. Rooted to the spot as Che Adams struck past him to put Blues 2-0 ahead. 6/10

Jack Robinson: Was caught up the pitch and was badly out of position when Lukas Jutkiewicz had the freedom of the box to nod his side in front. Looked more comfortable when Ben Osborn came on. 6/10

Danny Fox: Won his fair share of headers in the first half where the Reds defence were woefully exposed. Had two men to mark for the opener and could get near neither. Was the better of the two in the heart of defence and suspect it won’t be long before he’s playing alongside Hefele or Dawson. 6/10

Tobias Figueiredo: Like his partner Fox, exposed time and time again. Could have done more to try and block Jacques Maghoma’s cross which picked out Jutkiewicz. Out of position on more than one occasion, looked shaky throughout. 5/10

Sam Byram: Looked rusty, as you’d expect from somebody with only one 90 minute outing since March. Got better as the game wore on. Will get better the more games he plays and this was a useful 74 minutes. 6/10

Jack Colback: Found the first half difficult, was anonymous and spent much of it passing from side to side. Is much better suited to having a Guedioura, Osborn or even Yates alongside him. Improved later in the second half once he’d got Osborn and Lolley around him. 6/10

Ben Watson: Started poorly, gave the ball away which led to Birmingham’s first goal and his first half was one to forget. As poor as I’ve seen a Forest player for a good while, in all honesty. His second half display was not much better, continually stopped the flow and gave the ball away. 4/10

Matty Cash: Not involved in the first period and in the second, became more involved. Surged forward time and time again and you always felt if Forest were to get back into, he’d have something to do with it. A bundle of energy and desire as always. 7/10

Gil Dias: Was he playing in the first half? Barely touched the ball and in the second, looked lost for the most part. Did combine nicely with Joao Carvalho midway through to tee up Cash who saw a shot blocked. 5/10

Hillal Soudani: The Algerian had an effort in the opening couple of minutes and that was about the sum total of his involvement. He didn’t lack effort or persistence, but did seem to lack a position. Came off 10 minutes into the second half for Joao Carvalho. 5/10

Daryl Murphy: Barely had a meaningful touch in the 90 minutes until he pulled his side level, though, in truth, the service into him was pitiful. If he’s to play, you’ve got to get the ball into him and play off him which Forest just did not do. His goal was a reward for perseverance. 6/10

Joao Carvalho (for Soudani 55): A couple of nice touches and certainly helped Forest come to life in the second half when they needed it most. 6/10

Ben Osborn (for Watson 66): Showed energy, showed life and offered the side something they’d been badly lacking in the previous hour or so. Both he and Joe Lolley were certainly the catalysts for the revival. 7/10

Joe Lolley: (for Byram 74): An instant impact from the substitute. His first touch was to lash a fine volley past Lee Camp’s despairing dive and into the corner, to give his side hope. He changed the game, his snap shot was saved poorly by Camp and Murphy took the chance to lash in the equaliser. And being a local boy, it’ll mean a great deal to him to have such an impact against the Blues. 8/10

Pantillimon - 6 - doesn't inspire confidence and you can even pick this up from his body language.

Byram - 5 - perhaps rusty. Lets hope so.

Robinson - 4 - poor positionally and with his distribution.

Figueiredo - 6 - bit of a push to give him a 6 but I thought he did improve later on.

Fox - 6 - poor by his recent standards.

Watson - 3 - I wouldn't want to dwell too much on his mistake for the goal as that would deflect attention away from what was an absolutely shocking performance. Watson retired himself yesterday IMO.

Colback - 6 - bit of a Jeckyll & Hyde performance. Was poor in the first half but looked really good after Watson came off.

Cash - 8 - always full of energy, drive and desire. Typical Cash performance.

Soudani - 6 - looked to be trying hard but nothing really worked out for him.

Dias - 6 - a bit hot and cold for me. Looks to be a bit of an enigma.

Murphy - 7 - people say he's starved of service but the reason he doesn't get any is because he doesn't/ can't really move. Still in the right place for the goal though.

Osborn - 7 - better left back than Robinson. Better midfielder than Watson and possibly Colback. His energy and desire gave us a lift.

Carvalho - 7 - you can see that he has quality and better decision making/ vision than Dias. Just needs to impose himself more.

Lolley - 9 - completely turned around the game on his own. I haven't typically liked him starting, but he could turn in to a bit of a supersub with his running, pace and is he hits long range efforts like he did yesterday.

Pants 6 . Dropped the ball in both the games I've seen him play this season. Got away with it both times.
Byram 5 MOM against Bury. Terrible start yesterday
Fig 5 Another great loanee underperforming after we buy him. Hopefully still rusty after his injury.
Fox 7 Thought he played well.
Robinson 5
Watson 3 Said before the game he should never play alongside Colback
Colback 6 Improved over the game, but nearly gave away a clear one on one.
Cash 7 Energetic , works hard. Needs to learn how to cross.
Dias 5 A Portuguese McKay. Fast, but does little with the ball.
Soudani 5 I wasn't sure where he was playing. He probably wasn't either!
Murphy 6 If you play him, cross the ball in the air from the wings!

Lolley 8 If only he could play like that for 90 minutes!
Osborn 7 Worth a try in CM?
Carvalho 7 Great skill. Sometimes careless with his passing though.

Panti 5 - he is good at shouting at his team mates nd theatrics... Will nit be surprise if Steele ends up number 1 by the end of the season..
Bryan 6- too early to judge but not much difference from Dariwka
Robinson 5- not impressed ...not an improvement on Ozzy
Figi 5- very nervous not as calm nd composed as last season..mainly due to being left exposed by the midfield
Fox 6- he cant do any better...only negative yesterday that most of his crosses nd passes from the back went astray...
Watson 3- enough said...we threw money away on signing him permanently...we should have got him on loan till end of the season like Tomlin
Colback 5- a crab...in the past we had players playing his level but paid a fraction...to name one Gary Holt..
Cash 6- one of the few that tries nd you can expect something to happen when he has the ball...was getting frustrating cause he wss given the ball with his back to goal nd the Birmingham defender when he wanted the ball in space to run into..
Diaz 4- very poor...he has been found out already...this is not the italian league were you alowed time on the ball...he will struggle against physical teams
Soudani 5- he is enthusiastic nd a fighter but will struggle when under pressure...nd he will be alot under pressure..
Murphy 5- only because he scored before that he was on a 4...rarely involved...not always his fault as no balls were coming his way...dont expect any wonder goals from a static player...easily marked off...goal came compliment of Camp ( he still loves us...did if with QPR years ago)..
Subs
Ozzy 6- did what he does best...a gulf between him nd Watson
Carvalho 6- some nice touches but Ronaldo is not...no better then Dowell...not a game changer
Lolley 7- right place at the right time...took the goal superbly well nd the shot before the 2nd...Birmingham getting tired might have been a factor in allowing him space to shoot...in the first half and half the second..the Brum players were closing us down...
My view...others might differ..

We need to sort defence out and midfield before thinking about striker. When looking at youtube clips of Dias I felt from 20 mins of clips that he gave the ball away, often ran in to deadness and would be as liability. He needs to come on for last 15 mins of games when it is being stretched. Not from start.

There is a reason why we let in more headed goals than any team in the championship over past two seasons and why we are terrible at defending set pieces. Need to sort the defence out. Basically it has been the same defence as we finished with last season and their record was dismal.

AK needs to sit down and rethink strategy. Opportunity to test that new strategy against Newcastle, rather than rotate for the sake of rotation.

1. Go three at the back with big defenders. Pants won't feel he has to come and flap at corners etc.

2. Wingbacks that give extra in midfield and provide width in attack.

3. One holding midfield player and one with energy vision and skill, able to find that killer pass.

4. A player that can score goals playing just off the striker.

5. A striker who can hold the ball up, play with back to goal and run channels.

Simples.

Think u have ur cash tinted specs on- was busy but too often old manned and decision making suspect. Not as good as his 2 previous and he has to be at the top of his form to start imo I'd give him a 6-6.5

agree with rest

in an ideal world we would play our formation and let others worry it but it's not yet panning out. agree with Polly, we have players to try a different system- we need to give it a go. problem as I c it is that 4-2-3-1 might be better longer term but in the short term would like to see us try 3-5-2

I thought the thread title was a 'shock horror' headline celebrating the fact that any Forest players managed to score v Brum, given the awful performance!

I thought Fox and Colback were steady, Cash was lively, and the three subs changed the game. Not impressed with anyone else - Lolley would have to be MOM and I'd give Watson a minus rating.
