Play-Offs - Don't make me laugh

The way we are defending, we will be lucky to avoid a relegation scrap.

The Chairman should have pulled the trigger long ago.

 
We're just not good enough at the moment. The play offs are only remote possibly, for example if we could win around 6 games on the trot it could happen, but on current form, it aint gonna happen.
 
Seems player discipline was the issue tonight - with 10 men for 30% of the match it was unlikely we would put them under enough pressure to score the 2 goals needed, but at least we gave it a go.

I honestly think with a more settled team who seem to have gained confidence of late, the march back down the hill will have been halted. Jed may be right...that being only half way up we are rightfully neither up nor down...but team spirit and ambition despite this could still give us the impetus to have excitement towards the end of the season to counter the depression at the end of last, by enabling us to be pushing for a play off place.

The two recent away games were a tough call to which we responded well (remember those matches earlier in the season with barely a shot on target?) despite the disappointment of not being able to live up to last year's Christmas and New Year's surge - but that only set us up to march back down tbe hill again. Perhaps despite the scarcity of points this time we will have the opposite outcome second half of the year...I am quietly confident that we will end the year further up tbe table than we are now. Perhaps how much further depends on whether we can keep more goals out, as at least we are creating chances now!

I didn't go, but have heard a couple of reports from millwall and gills fans - ranging from millwall reports that we were indisciplined thugs who were lucky not to end the game with 7 men to gills fans saying it was a carve up from a homer ref that cost us. I'd envisage of course that it was somewhere in between - a bit like the end of season match last season - a competitive feisty local derby where millwall got the rub of the green and most decisions go there way. What are the views of those that went?
 
Having just seen a you-tube video of the highlights, I thought Bradley Dack was unlucky to be yellow carded for the second incident.

January however that's a different ball game. We have 5 games and with the exception of Sheff Utd a playoff challenging team could be reasonably expected to win them all.

Our performance over January will truly give us an indication of whether we will challenge or not. Any business in the transfer window will also be a good indicator as to whether Scally truly believes that the squad and JED are worth further investment.

My hunch is that we will be mid table mediocrity and JED will leave in the summer when his contract expires.
 
Having listened to the commentary and seen the highlights here are a couple of thoughts. We're still defensively vulnerable. The first goal came from a straight ball where Cargill I think lost the aerial battle that provided the flick on for the goal. The second was another case where we were defensively not strong enough. For the rest of the game we more than held our own with Neil Harris going out of his way in his post match interview to say that we played well. However, for all our possession we seemed to create very little. There in a nutshell is our season. Fragile at the back and a bit toothless up front. As I have said before, too good for relegation and not good enough for promotion. Classic mid table in fact.

January gives us an opportunity to change things. I still think we need three players. Another centre back, a more aggressive midfielder and a faster forward. I'm not holding my breath !
 
I actually thought we played OK. Probably didn't deserve to lose the game. We dominated the ball but really lacked a cutting edge. For all Cody's endeavour, he cannot play as a lone front man - especially away from home. Millwall's first goal proved how key an effective front partnership is. Long ball in, excellent flick and emphatic finish. We didn't really carve out any proper opportunities, and when we did Dack was at the heart of it. He was excellent second half, absolutely everywhere and back to his old self. Agree that his second yellow was a joke decision from the ref. Last minute, just a desperate attempt to win the ball back for his team. Zero common sense applied from the ref. Their second goal was ridiculous and knocked all the wind out of our sails. So typically Gills. All in all though relatively positive. We desperately need a new striker to play the lone role, if we continue to play that system. I actually thought the defenders played well. They won't come across a better strike pairing all season in my opinion. Morrison will win flicks, its how you deal with the second ball, and that is what undid us for our first. Konchesky was done for pace and paid the price, but to be fair to him that was the only time all game he was beaten for pace and found himself in a one on one situation.

I cannot see the current team we have anywhere near the play off's. Yes we have quality players within the team, but we don't have any leaders who will shout and get the team organised. I went last night and with the exception of some good bits of spell we offered nothing much going forward. JED who I rate as a manager fails to deliver good tactics. Newport fans were saying the same thing. Jed doesn't have a back up plan. If he goes in the summer I can't see him getting a decent job in the championship with the way in which it has fizzled out last season and this season.
Good luck to him if he does, sometimes managers just click with teams look at Alexander at scunthorpe compared to him at fleetwood. Think we would need someone who priority is to get the team to defend and ensure we don't leak silly goals.
 
I do wonder whether Scally is actively looking to sell the club. With his health issues, I certainly think that if anybody showed interest now he might sell on more generous terms than he would have done previously.

I believe he will have been in charge for about 24 years by the end of this season and we are seemingly no nearer a new stadium which was his target.

Personally I would be happy to end the season in the top half. If we are looking more solid defensively by then, I would offer JED a new one year contract. If we are still leaking goals and showing no improvement, I would say thanks but look elsewhere.

I have always felt that Scally will sell before he says a word about wishing to sell.Meaning of course we will know nothing until the deal is done.That is largely how he likes it at our club A club our size can't afford to announce transfer of players before they happen.It is fairly easy at our club with only one person pulling all of the strings and with almost total control. Personally I would think that Scally would want to carry on if he is able. But if he could sort planning for a new ground my guess is the club with that would have more value to any buyer.Without that Scally is unlikely to make a sizable sum.If that event ever happens then Scally will need more funds so something would have to give.Until that time unless Scally is forced by Ill health or a silly over valuation I really can't see him selling.
