Before today I was not aware that both the England and Australia rugby union teams operate a policy of having to play in the country to qualify to play for the country. This may well exclude some otherwise eligible players from selection but does encourage those with a sense of patriotism and a desire to represent their country to ply their trade in the country of their eligibility.

Just a thought but how would this sit with fans if UEFA or FIFA introduced a similar rule?

It can be argued that it would limit the availability of top players to some of the top clubs, it might also reduce the availability of "cheap" imports. However, it would also have the effect of keeping domestic teams more aligned with the nation of their domestic competition, fostering a greater sense of belonging. It could reduce the football mercenary status.

Or would it just reduce the quality of some countries' national teams, as their best players may have gone abroad and given up their eligiblity.

What do you all think?

Also, how would this work for the home nations? Does anyone know how England apply this rule regards the home nations?
