Manchester United chief Gill nominated for Uefa role

Following the news that Geoff Thompson, who has represented the FA in the role since 2009, will step down next May, the governing body has nominated the Red Devils boardmember

The FA Board have named Manchester United chief executive David Gill as their candidate to join next year’s Uefa Executive Committee.

The move comes after news that Geoff Thompson, who has represented the FA in the role since 2009, will step down next May.

Eight seats are up for grabs on the committee, with president Michel Platini at the helm.

A statement on the governing body’s official website read: “The FA Board on Thursday agreed to nominate David Gill as its candidate for the upcoming UEFA Executive Committee membership election.

“Gill, Chief Executive of Manchester United Football Club and an FA Board member, has been proposed ahead of next year’s elections at UEFA Congress in London.

Geoff Thompson, who has represented The FA on UEFA’s Executive Committee since 2000, steps down in May leaving a vacant position for an elected representative.”

Gill joined Manchester United in 1997, and became their chief executive in 2003.

I still don't see how this is allowed. It's such a massive conflict of interest it's not even funny. You couldn't even write this shit in a fictitious novel because people would think it's too over the top.

Mario Puzo could do it.

I have been thinking a lot about things at the moment(it hurts)
Does our Club know something the rest dont
We have spent very little this window
We are buying British players
2 and 2 make 5...

Caramba ...new Fair Play rules will include debt being welcomed, dodgy share deals being welcomed and teams that bring a lot of investment into the game being threatened with exclusion.......also those with Rednosed managers will be given easy draws and the referees of their choice ....seems fair enough.

looks like Manure and Slur Alex's mob are going to get 'Favourable' ties in next years Europa league rounds, home every match after each midweek Europa League game, and the like....and we get all away games in the CL matches.......somethings never change...

David Gill will step down as Manchester United chief executive on 30 June, the Premier League club have confirmed.

Gill, 55, joined United in February 1997 as finance director before becoming chief executive in 2003. He will remain a director of the club.

Executive vice chairman Ed Woodward will take over as chief executive.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Him stepping down is a big loss to me but the fact that he is staying on the board encourages me."

He added: "If I could have found a way of persuading him to stay I would love to have done that. But he has made his decision and I respect him for it."

Gill, a chartered accountant by profession, was named vice chairman of the Football Association in October last year and has been nominated as its candidate in the upcoming Uefa Executive Committee elections in May 2013.

"It has been the greatest privilege to serve Manchester United," said Gill.

I have worked alongside the finest manager in the history of the game and been part of what I consider to be the best club in the best sport in the world.

"It has been a very hard decision because I love this club and, as the fans' banner says, it is 'more than a religion'.

"I've experienced some incredible highs, such as the Treble in 1999 and the Premier League and Champions League double in 2008, and lows, like losing the title with the last kick of the season last year. But that is what makes this club and this sport so compelling."

David was appointed on to the Board in July 2006, is a member of the Professional Game Board and also serves on the Nominations Committee. He was appointed onto The FA Council as a representative of The FA Premier League in 2004. David also serves as an Executive Board member of the European Clubs' Association and UEFA's Professional Football Strategy Council and Club Competitions Committee."

More to follow.

Just a few things I've seen in the last few minutes. Added it to this thread rather than start another.
Still seems to be a conflict of interest?

It is a conflict of interest. Is there any other industry in the world that allows this? Mind boggling.

"It has been the greatest privilege to serve Manchester United," said Gill.

There was more to the quote that was printed:

"It's been an honor to rig draws in our favor, from Carling Cup draws to Champions League groups. I can't tell you how many "favors" I had to give in order to secure Cluj this season, but it allowed us a chance to look terrible against one of the strongest clubs in the world. I've always had fun 'bantering' with the match officials about how we'd pay them after the game, and it's been a privilege to get everyone on board with our club so that we really haven't had to upgrade our squad and rely solely on the man in the middle of the pitch. The linesman have also been tremendous for us, but really, without the help of the officials, who knows. I'd also like to thank the FA for not holding us to that silly offside rule. We'd be mid-table if we had to follow it."

I know that David has two great qualities: he is straight and he always puts Manchester United first.

AND THEY'RE GONNA LET A PERSON LIKE THIS BE INVOLVED IN ANYTHING THAT INVOLVES THE LEAGUE?!

holy **cking shit.
