Was visiting the needles today ( Isle of Wight for those who don't know) . Was playing crazy golf, and my son spotted a chap with a Lincoln City T shirt on. I had a chat with him. He lives near Bourne. Him and his partner only started following the imps for last 6 home games of last season , and are hoping to buy season tickets for this !!! I'd say both in their mid to late 40's. I was somewhat surprised, especially considering how we played the last few home games, but they are hooked!!

Last time I was at the needles met a bloke who asked me where I was from and he then gave me a lengthy history lecture about England's greatest hero capturing Lincoln castle from the French

That would be the second Battle of Lincoln in 1217 when soldiers of Henry III of England took the castle from troops loyal to Louis XIII of France in what were deemed the First Baron Wars. This war was in effect the English Knights breaking away from Norman Rule established after the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and sticking two fingers up at the French :finger:.

Oh hang on the two fingers came from the Battle of Agincourt in 1415 :grinning:.

The Battle of Lincoln is considered pivotal in English history and it was the beginning of the end for any Norman rule in England.

Probably what this tells you is that you can have all the unions and politicians you like but the English and French have been warring either verbally or physically on and off for 1000 odd years. It's clearly not going to stop anytime soon

No evidence to support this..a bit of good old Anglo mythmaking

And no mention of Nicolaa de la Haye in all that? A genuine 13th century heroine?

Indeed she was an amazing lady by all accounts. Indeed the castle was defended by troops loyal to Henry but they were surrounded by troops loyal to Louis. There is a fascinating book I read a good few years ago chronicling the Baron Wars and she gets a good write up in that. I recently went to a seminar in the Nicolaa de la Haye Building at the University of Lincoln so it's nice she gets some recognition in the City.
