Picking the captain

It seems that an element of democracy might be entering the City set up with new coach Pep Guardiola saying that should Vincent Kompany be absent from the side the rest of the team should identify who should wear the armband.

"I am not in the locker-room, the dressing-room, or their own meetings when they have to change something. They have to choose for themselves the best guy to represent them.

We’ve only been together a few weeks or a month and they know each other better than me. It’s their responsibility.”

Good idea or not? Should this decision be left to the players or should the coach nominate who his leader on the pitch ought to be?

Just put that suggestion out to a poll on the front page, didn't know you had already started a thread on the same theme.

I think Vinnie Kompany has arguably been Manchester City's best Captain and is always there at the game whether he is playing or not, a great motivator and is a born leader.

I think that Vinnie should remain as Club Captain, but obviously when not playing that post has to be given up to someone who is going to get picked every week, but here there are some players that cannot handle the mantle and it affects their game.

I think for that reason I would not select Yaya Toure for the job and for a second a goal keeper is not ideal, you want someone who is calm when the heat is on and can accept that responsibility.

I personally would have given it to Zabaleta, but his form has dipped and could not be guaranteed a place in the team.

my other choice would be Fernandinho or Kolarov, who by giving him this role would have to stay in the zone and that could only be good for City.

On the other hand ask Brian Kidd to select someone.

Great minds Buzz :026:

Can't fault any of that Buzz. Neither Hart nor Yaya would be my picks - keepers too far away from the action and Yaya does not seem to be a motivator. Zabaleta leads by example but his recent injury problems have jeopardised his position. I'm personally not sure about Kolarov for the role. Given his performances last season I could see Fernandinho doing the job - he certainly works hard enough but am unsure/unsighted on his leadership (talking/verbal.....motivational) skills.

I listened to them discussing it on 5 live earlier, it would appear he said VK will be captain if he is on the field but for the time being until he gets to know the players more he thinks they are the best people to choose, i think this is a great idea and shows the team he has respect for their views, the more i see, hear and read about this guy the more i like him.

Coach should take responsibility for this imho. Leaving it to the players is all well and good but there's bound to be disaffection and disagreement from those who wanted someone else. They're more likely to accept a fait accompli from the manager whom they are out to impress.

Why not pick the XI and then a captain from that - unless VK4 is playing then obviously he would be captain. Don't think it should be the goalie and Kipling might not be guaranteed a game, likewise Zab. Letting the players pick the skipper runs the risk of turning it into a popularity contest but with the hidden danger of cliques.

whilst not labouring the point Kenny, some players just can't handle it.

If they are going to go to the dressing room, then those players willing to take on the role should put their names forward, but please don't give it to someone who does not want it.

Having said I am not keen I can understand perhaps Guardiola's thoughts here - about engendering a level of trust and understanding within the group and with him, the coach. Generating a sense of collective responsibility.

Perhaps it helps that I am currently reading Guillem Balague's biography of the guy. :048:

I wonder who picked Fernandinho as captain against Bayern.

I think he'd be a good captain in Vinnie's absence.

59% Of Pollsters Prefer Fernadinho As Captain

Vital Manchester City stalwart, Buzz Lightyear asked Blues, “Vinnie Kompany is injured, who should replace him as captain?”

Vincent was, unfortunately crocked for a large part of last season, and with the 2016/17 campaign beginning on Saturday 13 August City boss, Pep Guardiola wants his players to decide amongst themselves who they would prefer to take over the captains role while the Belgium international recuperates.

That armband went round the houses far too often last season for my liking. We should settle on a skipper and vice and a 2nd vice in line with our three kits. Lol
