Penalties - the keepers

Ok, nobody wants it to get to a penalty shootout & I doubt that it will......

But just in case, I did a bit of digging on the subject on the records of Mignolet and Caballero in the penalty saving stakes. I appreciate that the dynamics of penalty shootouts are different to perhaps those in the heat of a match.

These figures are over their whole careers in all competitions: -

Mignolet:

Total penalties faced - 35
Saved - 6
Not saved - 29
Ratio - 17.1% (6/35)

Caballero:

Total penalties faced - 23
Saved - 4*
Not saved - 19
Ratio - 17.3% (4/23)

*The data source does not appear to have been updated to include Caballero's save against Chelsea last weekend in the Disrespect Cup so I took the executive decision to incorporate it.

Not sure what this tells us about the lottery of penalty shootouts.

However as an aside it does seem to indicate that more penalties seem to be awarded in English football than in Spain or South America. Caballero started his career in 2004/05 and has faced over a third fewer penalties than Mignolet whose career commenced in 2007/08. That is quite a difference.

For completeness Joe Hart's details:

Total penalties faced - 48
Saved - 8
Not Saved - 40
Ratio - 16.6%

Anyone know the odds of City not getting a stonewall nailed without a shadow of a doubt , that everyone in the ground watching on TV without the benefit of replays slow mo , different angles fly on the wall except the Officals and the opposition manager who didn't see it?

Lol, very interesting facts Buzzer. On this subject I sounded out Spanish colleagues who are Real and Rayo fans respectively. The consensus on Caballero is great shot stopper but positional disaster waiting to happen and needs a strong defence ahead of him. Gulp!

The stats didn't lie Willy was the best keeper to have in a penalty situation and now has even greater stats.

My other point came true, I wonder if I could have got odds on that?

Caballero's figure adjusted to include Sunday's heroics....

Total penalties faced - 27
Saved - 7*
Not saved - 20
Ratio - 25.9% (7/27)

There were loads of amazing Willy references on Twitter and around the internet after Willy Caballero stole the show in the Capital One Cup final between Liverpool and Manchester City last Sunday.
