The US inmates charged per night in jail

...........................................................

A widespread practice in the US known as "pay to stay" charges jail inmates a daily fee while they are incarcerated. For those who are in and out of the local county or city lock-ups - particularly those struggling with addiction - that can lead to sky-high debts.
David Mahoney is $21,000 (£13,650) in debt. Not from credit cards. Not from school loans.
He's accumulated the massive tab because of the days he spent locked up in the local jail in Marion, Ohio, which is a small town with a major heroin epidemic. Mahoney, a lanky 41-year-old, has struggled with addiction since he was a teenager, eventually stealing to fuel his habit. He got caught a lot, even burgling the same bar twice.

Well, he was stupid enough to start the vile drug and burgling the same bar twice, not only was he stupid, he was also cruel. Feel more for the bar owner. And yes, I know drugs are complicated but the easiest way for him not to be in debt was for him not to have started injecting shite into his system and expecting others to pay for him.

Not a bad idea making these fools pay.

Although better if they were charged to be rehabilitated and fined even more if they then don't help themselves.

I totally agree with you on that. Let it be a direct wage debit like they are doing with Uni fees in this country. Then they have no choice to pay it back

yup, would also make them a bit more responsible for themselves instead of forever living the poor me victim mentality.

Problem is though he has to rob to fund his drug habit so what are they saying it's wrong to rob to fund your habit but it's ok to rob to pay for your prison stay will this not just escalate the problem.

More of a problem really when it comes to paying for your 'free' legal representation in the country and some states - if you can't pay EVEN IF innocent you end up back in jail until you pay + the fine lol

John Oliver did a great piece on it a few weeks back.
