Patrick Roberts Given Green Light

Manchester City Sporting Director, Txiki Bergiristain has given Celtic’s on-loan winger, Patrick Roberts the green light to play against his parent club when the two clubs face one another in Champions League group stages.

This is rubbish, since when have loan players been allowed to play against their clubs, unless this is part of a deal we know nothing about.

Does seem a bit odd. Most loan deals specifically preclude playing against the parent club. Maybe because it is outside the PL?

I think this rule about playing against your parent club is a PL thing only, I don't think La Liga employ this rule for example.

Remember Courtois playing against Chelsea a few seasons back.

This story has caused a bit of a stir on Twitter.

As far as I am aware loan players cannot play against their parent club. However, Roberts (Celtic) loan deal might be different to one's we're used to here in England.

UEFA issued this statement around the time of the Courtois saga.

"Both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations contain clear provisions which strictly forbid any club to exert, or attempt to exert, any influence whatsoever over the players that another club may (or may not) field in a match," the statement read.
"It follows that any provision in a private contract between clubs which might function in such a way as to influence who a club fields in a match is null, void and unenforceable so far as UEFA is concerned.
"Furthermore, any attempt to enforce such a provision would be a clear violation of both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations and would therefore be sanctioned accordingly."

Reading up on a bit more it seems it's actually a FIFA ruling so it's the Premier League ruling that's the odd one.

So basically, the PL specifically prevent loan players playing against their parent club, but UEFA specifically prevent loan players being prevented from playing against their parent club. So, as it's a UEFA competition we're playing in........

Ha, ha, this made me smile :002:

I published this article earlier this morning and then continued my morning business. Around an hour later I checked on the my work (via mobile phone) and realised I had made a minor spelling mistake (play) when it should have read, player. I couldn't do nothing about it until around an hour ago.

Around 11(ish) the MEN wrote a similar story and yup, they had made the very same mistake on the very same word.

I wonder if their writer may have copy and pasted mine :010:

I am not happy about Roberts playing

It will be good to see how he's developing north of the border. I expect Pep will have him back at City sooner rather than later, especially if he thinks he's any good.
