Patrick Macnee, who starred as the devilishly urbane spy John Steed in The Avengers, was a man of few regrets.
His womanising, his wild partying and his outrageous upbringing were remembered with a raffish laugh, right up to his death last month at his California ranch, aged 93.
But he did feel that on one occasion in the late Eighties, he had gone too far — when he published his searingly candid autobiography.
He confessed to close friend Linda Thorson, who played his Avengers sidekick Tara King, that he had revealed too many secrets. His sexual predilections and his compulsive infidelities were laid bare, as were the drink-sodden lives of his eccentric parents. Schoolboy fumblings, wartime couplings, Hollywood affairs and Soho encounters were all recounted with his relish for a florid anecdote.
