Parents TV!

The Fear

A Wise Man (once sat next to him)
Ok, got my parents a sky+ box a few years back and a he tv.

Dad pays the monthly now at £40 a month. They only watch the standard channels though, so forty squid is a bit much. I told him to ring and sky offered him just £2.50 a month discount!!

What would you do? Mom uses the free broadband, they love the sky+ recorder so would you just leave it or any other suggestions?

Does that include the telephone line rental? That is over £15 a month, so don't forget this has to be paid whoever you are with. In fact, Sky's is cheaper than most.

It's difficult to know without seeing exactly what they watch, but you get the Freeview channels even if you stop paying altogether. That would probably affect the broadband though.

I keep looking to get away from Sky, but even with all the online services just can't find anything that compares. I can't get Virgin, but check out if they offer something cheaper for them?

No, talktalk for phone.

Really only the free view channels, I only realised today.

So would their box including hd keep working if they cancelled for BBC, itv, four, five etc?

They do packages far cheaper than £40 for the entertainment channels. That sounds excessive - have they got Movies? It sounds like they have just given him a discount on a bigger package, not actually looked at alternative ones.

You can get the Freeview channels without a subscription, but I don't think Sky+ works, so no recording.

I think it works out cheaper if you have all 3 services i.e T.V , phone and broadband with the same company , so it might be worth asking them how much difference that would make.

Ah, they love the sky plus.

Will look at packages. Think they just have entertainment and news.

That answers my question though, they love the sky plus box, so they will need to keep a subscription.

Cheers Heath.

Always happy to help.

Many Freeview and Freesat boxes have the same facilities as Sky+ built in as well now. Sky are good, but not compulsory. It means spending up front on a new Box, and maybe having the Aerial looked at, but in the long term, it's worth it.

We bought my Mum one, and cancelled her Sky. It works in very much the same way, and she had no trouble learning the interface. You can pay extra for additional Channels, such as Gold, if you want as well.

No idea how much it cost but my parents bought a FTA reciever with built in PVR a while back. Linked to their satellite dish they get what I believe your folks are looking for. Obviously they would then need a separate broad band contract but I believe there are some good deals around.

If they can get Virgin I know that they do some great deals.

Not sure I can get them a new thing to learn they do like the sky one!!

I think they should be fine to just downgrade from the entertainment package to the original one, still got what they need, plus hd etc.

Worst thing I ever did was giving mom a laptop. The mobile phone was/is bad enough.

As per my profile on that thing kefkat did, I only like to tell people once how to so something, I'd never have made it as a teacher. Lol

Bless her, she times it all wrong. I will have spent all day at the computer, then tired myself in the gym, then she rings with questions no one would be able to understand computer related !!!!

I get the whole family, Fear, and most of my friends. I know exactly what you mean. My Mum is especially frustration. I can tell she's not doing what I tell her, and is clicking on things I haven't told her to.

I've been using a program called Teamviewer to remotely log in instead, recently. It's much easier.

While we`re on the subject, does anyone know how i can charge mine.It keeps saying battery low, find anoth

Get a price from Virgin if they have it in your parent's area. What we have is far cheaper than all the other packages we get offered. They always doing offers too, to get you over to them.

Agrees re helping people with their laptops etc. I have to admit I have been shown by the best over the years as all my lads are internet savvy. My eldest works in the industry in programming. My youngest is moving into it. My 2nd lad doesn't work in it however extremely good at anything with it.

Never had to take a laptop/pc in for repair. Just set up my friends laptop. I nearly died when she said it wasn't working properly and could I help. When I went round she had no anti virus on it, she had never done the updates etc. etc. The viruses on their were unbelievable. Fortunately she had never used banking or bought anything on it.

Took it away to sort. It took 8 hours to defrag, 6 hours to update and another few to set the laptop up properly. I am not giving her weekly lessons on looking after it and various.

Get rid and get freeview instead? Most TV's if not all come with freeview already installed. £40 just to record some shows is too much. Not sure if you can record shows and get on demand with freeview but you should check it out

If you stop the subscription they can still get the Freeview stuff. After a week or so Sky will start making offers to you to come back. Took about a month with us and we went from £70 a month to £12 or so. I did get rid of the Sports package as the only thing I want to see on there are the Villa games and we don't get on much!
