Overweight people

BBJ

Father Of The Forum
A few years back, the doctor advised me to lose about ten pounds. In fact, since then, I've lost close to a stone and a half which is about as much as I want to shed. I'm about thirteen and a half stone now which means that at close to 6'3", I'm a big long drink of water!
I met a young man today, perhaps 5'8" in height who wore a 23" collar shirt and 54" waist trousers.
I did not enquire about his weight but it had to be very considerable.
How do people get SO overweight?

I've a son who eats and eats and eats and he's skinnier than I am, though.

Thats a good and fair point BBJ, my dad is as thin as a rake and yet he eats more than me by far yet i am 17 and a half stone now ive gone up but mine is down to lack of getting about due to having tempermental vision tbh

Keeping yourself on the go is the key, as soon as you stop you have had it, my weight has come back on as soon as my eyes play up and end up having to stop in more for longer, so go on move ffs move it move it!!!

BBJ my 2nd son like that. Infact it's 1 of the worst parts, as he stops eating, when his bi-polar not stable as he is so skinny anyway. Some people have very fast metabolisms. When they walk accross the room the body doesn't recognition it has stopped walking so they are constantly burning up calories. That is my lad condition too.

Some people are genuniely overweight because of health problems. Such conditions as thyroid, cushings disease and prader willi, are but 3 that cause people to be overweight and there are many others.

They are talking more and more about a 'fat gene' where some are apparently more susceptible to becoming fat.

However, eating the wrong food and not exercising is the main reason. Simples!

He must be so uncomfortable, baffles me. Even at my worst health wise there was/is still a limit to how much weight I will allow myself to put on and when I get the window of opportunity I always fight to get it back off.

(As I posted in weights thread, nearly 14stone at moment BUT just fitting back in my 30" jeans)

I have a really strange metabolism.
I have eaten virtually whatever i`ve wanted, whenever i`ve wanted and been a fairly big drinker all my life, but I`m 5"10 and 11 stone.I`ve put about half a stone on in the last 2 years, but i put that down to this indian lad at work bringing his mum`s curries in all the time.
My son is 21 and just about 6 foot.He is always eating.Even i couldn`t eat what he does, but he says he has to because of his gymn work. He`s in perfect condition, but eats like a horse.
Some people only need to look at food and they put weight on.I consider myself to be very lucky in that department.

If the cycle was less vicious would you ride it prep?

Or did you mean vicious circle!?

Another answer is people put too many excuses as to why they CAN'T lose weight instead of the reasons why they CAN.

Food, in particular glucose (sugar) is broken down in cells into a chemical called adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is used as energy in all cells for all active processes, and the remaining food energy will be converted into triglycerides which is fat, so that it can be broken down into glucose later if needed.

People who exercise rarely or have a slow/low metabolism will use less ATP so the glucose from food will be stored as fat for later use, but as they don't excersise they won't ever need the energy stored in the triglycerides so it will never be broken down and will just build up and they will look very fat.

Was that the answer you were looking for? Or do you want a more detailed biology lesson? :96:

I think it has to do with a combination of everything all previous posters have mentioned. Alot of very skinny people under-consume by 1+ days per week - i.e. they only consume 6 days worth of food/drink (in terms of cal or kj) compared with alot of overweight people who over-consume by 1+ days per week. It is usually a cumulative effect.

Kefkat - thyroid issues can also affect weightloss - i.e. hyperthyroidism.

There is definitely no at gene in my family, I was a strip of piss until I was about 21, then the lifestyle started to take effect and I've never really regained the Original look. My weight fluctuates between 16 and 18 stone, but I agree with Clive, activity is the key, mixed in with diet. I've been losing weight since my son was born due to not having time to eat, using any spare time to sleep, and walking about, carrying him etc... For exercise.

Well if we are going to get into the biology of it I would like to point out that the triglycerides do not actually break down to glucose but to ketones, which the body uses equally was well as glucose as it's fuel :14:

And indeed hypothyroidism.

carrying him etc... For exercise.

I would suggest feeding him up, that way he will be a lot heavier and then you will lose more weight.

Give it a few years and then he can carry you around to lose the weight he has gained.

#teamwork.

I always like the excuse fatty fat fat fats give who use mobility scooters! It's my medication!

Yes if your medication is gorging yourself on huge kebabs and family buckets of KFC I expect it is!!!

I found that my Metabolism slowed down after my teens then I continued with the same lifetyle until one day I realised I had gained 3 and a half stone. Problem is when that metabolism slows down you gotta start thinking more about eating better and exercising - which can be quite difficult if you have aways relied on just your metabolism to controll your weight! Now I have done something about it. I was never too happy about being a scrawney 10 and a half stone so in a way i'm glad I put on a bit of meat. The heaviest I have been is 14 stone. I'm 13 stone now but weight doesn't really matter its how you look and feel that matters.
