Our Youngsters

Vital Reserves Team
I know it’s been thrust upon us by circumstance, but I personally don’t think it’s a bad thing that our youngsters are being given a chance of first team football.

Under Cook there didn’t seem to be a path from the academy to the first team, which I never thought a good thing !.

At least now they are being given an opportunity to show what they can do and with guidance and mentoring by the older more experienced players, I’m sure a number of these lads will develop to be very valuable members of the Latics first team squad.

After all, teams such as Liverpool and Man United give their youth a chance, take Trent Alexander and Marcus Rashford as classic examples, both still only 22 years old, yet first team regulars for the past few seasons - hard to believe they would be getting called “Kids” if they played at Wigan !

The reason a lot of our youngsters weren't given a chance over recent years was because they weren't good enough.

Some of our lads went out on loan to non league teams and didn't impress so they clearly weren't going to be up to the Championship or League 1 football.

Geldhardt obviously showed flashes but other than him the Lang in recent years did anything while on loan and admin sent him to Motherwell on a free loan.

Gap between youth level and even L1 is huge and I think having to throw the lads in at the deep end has highlighted that.

Two years ago, Chris Merrie was struggling to get gametime at National League North side Altrincham. Olly Crankshaw was playing at the same level for Curzon Ashton. Adam Long played for Notts County in the National League last season.

It's why I've been so loath to criticise them even when we are losing games and someone like Obi for example has shown that he is out of his depth. Ultimately they've have been thrown in a situation they should not be in and are doing the best they can. The big positive for me is that every single one of these lads will be far better players for the experiences they are going through right now. That win away at Portsmouth with those two lads Perry and Merrie starting should go down as one of our finest wins in recent years when you consider the circumstances.

Playing their youngsters is good for some teams !.

Who are the youngsters Barca will turn to against Real Madrid?

Report: Leeds plan bid for Wigan’s Sean McGurk in January

Leeds United are hoping to sign a Wigan Athletic youngster for a second successive window, with The Sun reporting that the Whites are eyeing a bid for Sean McGurk.

Gelhardt has made an incredibly start to life with Leeds’s under-23s. He has often been the standout performer in the number 10 role.

You would certainly find it difficult to argue with any supporters who backed the teenager to potentially make his first-team debut this season.

And it appears that Leeds are now hoping to add another Wigan youngster to their ranks.

According to The Sun, the Whites failed to sign McGurk in the summer. However, they are planning to make a fresh move when the January window opens.

Leeds are not the only side to have shown interest in McGurk in recent months. The Daily Mail reported over the summer that Tottenham had also made an enquiry.

It will be interesting to see if Leeds face a battle to sign the 17-year-old. But, having already won the race for Gelhardt, they may feel optimistic that they go on and complete a deal for McGurk.

Well let’s hope we have an owner in place who will be in a position to turn down any relative pittance they might care to throw at us.
Whilst we certainly won’t be in any position to turn down the sale (ultimately) ...hopefully we won’t be the wholly desperate ‘basket case’ we’ve been in recent months.

Joe Gelhardt wasn’t deemed good enough by Cook for regular 1st team footy last season but it looks like he could well be on his way to making first team appearances in the premier league this season - great news for the lad !

Also young Sean could be followings soon in Joe”s footsteps again good luck to the lad !

As I’ve said before, we have some really great talent in our U18 and U23 teams and this talent needs to be nurtured by first team appearances !

Let’s face it some of our regular “experienced” first team regular players would struggle in a Sunday league team !

Give our youth a chance !

No, Cook wanted to bring him in slowly and not destroy his confidence by having him play in a team that was low on confidence and losing nearly every week.
On the flip side, when we turned the corner and won nearly every week he couldn't change a winning team too much.
We were fighting for survival and it wasn't the time to blood youngsters like Gelhardt. Double edged sword I know but we very nearly achieved survival by doing what Cook did. I believe that if we had not gone into admin and clinched survival weeks before end of season then Gelhardt would have played a much bigger part in the final 6 games or so

Unfortunately we have history of not trusting the young uns and not being prepared to give them real game time and patience. If this kid is attracting this kind of attention then he should be in the first team . He will only improve playing at a higher level and if a regular it pushes up the price.
