Organ Donor?

The Fear

A Wise Man (once sat next to him)
Just wondered if you were on the list, if not, why?!

While the boy's mother weeps in the background, doctors surround 11-year-old Liang Yaoyi's gurney and bow.

Moments later, the body was rushed into surgery so that the child's organs could be used to save desperately sick transplant patients, in accordance with his wishes.

The moving shot was taken last month at Zhongshan University Hospital, China, where schoolboy Liang died of brain cancer.

Despite his traumatic battle with the disease, Liang's final thoughts were for the lives of others. His last request was that his organs be donated.

Is there any way of checking? I filled in a form and got a card 25 years ago, and assume this is still valid, but don't know if things have changed in the meantime?

I suppose the safe thing to do is re-register. They can do what they want with my body.

I still say we should have an opt out system.

Scrub that - there is a link to amend your details, so I'm going to have a look.

Edit - they are going to send me a letter to confirm. An email would have done, and been cheaper, but at least I'll know for sure.

Cheers Fear.

Always seems a great thing to do to me.

Same as the brilliant people, some on here, who give blood. Saved my life that particular donation!

I wonder if it would be wrong to make people opt out not to opt in? I would think a decent percentage never bother but would be happy to save someone's life after their death.

I do think that the people that really don't want to donate would make the effort to opt out. What we have now is a system hereby the laziness factor means that millions that wouldn't object don't bother to register.

It still gives you a choice, so your human rights are nor infringed.

I've heard debate/discussions regards everybody in and if you don't wish to, you just opt out. I personally think that is the way forward.

But that's just my opinion.

Heath, it took me all of one minute to fill the form out. It matters not if I was registered years ago, I'm registered now. This form should take care of it.

Thanks Jonathan for bringing this to our attention however I did notice you unchecked the box for donating hair..... :17:

Seriously what difference will it make to me IF I'm dead!!!!!

Ear and nose hair still on the list col

People are funny about this sort of stuff, same as wills or talking about funerals. I don't get it, it doesn't tempt fate, but one day we all do go.

Not having a will, and last time due to the brain issues even more importantly power of attorney, is mad. It causes the ones you leave so many problems.

But with organs, what could could be better than giving someone life after you are gone and most people would love a little bit of a The Fear inside them. :17:

Cheers Col. That's effectively what I've done. Like you say, better to be registered more than once than not at all. My family know my wishes on this, but this just cuts any doubt out.

I am not allowed to donate blood, here in Norway, anyone who lived in the UK duing the "BSE years" is banned. They fear the risk of it spreading as CJD in the human population.....the fact that I am a zero risk case due to being vegetarian and as such never ate the "infected" beef means little to the situation.

Mind you, I have been called a mad cow a few times so perhaps the autjorities are vindicated after all.

They can have anything of me that they want.

I registered a long time back but will check that I am still on the records I have a feeling that because I give blood as well there is a automatic entry to organ donations , but I may be wrong.

They won't take my blood because I've had transfusions. You'd think after x amount of years it wouldn't make a difference really!?

I filled one out the other day funnily enough after I updated my tax disc on line. My family would allow it anyway.

The number of cases worldwide are virtually consigned exclusively to the UK and France - http://www.cjd.ed.ac.uk/documents/worldfigs.pdf

But 177 people infected between 1980- 1996 is a very minute amount of people.

It's still too many of course, and was a bigger scandal than the horse meat one recently, but I think the uproar around the horse meat scandal was not over the top, putting shit into our food that shouldn't be there is as bad a crime as anything out there.

Okay I know it was technically that the cows were being fed the remains of other cows, and that was what infected them, and I am actually feeling quite upset remembering back to hundreds of thousands of cows that suffered unimaginable cruelty.

I'm not a vegetarian, so you're welcome to call me a hypocrite and a part of the problem, I would understand your ire, but animal cruelty makes my blood boil.

I read an article about a lad from Brighton who had turned vegetarian but already had the onset of vCJD - http://www.theargus.co.uk/news/10631032.Doctors_tell_28_year_old_Saltdean_vegetarian_he_has_just_months_to_live_after_contracting_CJD/

I think I registered years ago. Can't remember now. Anyway I have registered/re-registered so they can have my parts if they want them

As others have suggested - I think unless you officially opt out it should be the deemed that consent has been given and the family should have no powers to prevent the organs being taken.

Too many people die because organs are not taken from people who were probably not bothered either way but due to this apathy never registered or had the discussion with their family.

I'm already registered. It must be a very difficult question not only to answer but ask.

Not sure human rights even come into it - you're dead.

Opt out system all the way or compulsary, you ain't going to need anything.
