Open Letter To Russell Brand From RBS Worker

The Fear

A Wise Man (once sat next to him)

Quite funny!

Ouch!

“And then there is that film you're working on, isn't there, for which I understand your production company is benefitting from the Enterprise Investment Scheme, allowing the City investors funding your film to avoid tax. Was that the film you were making on Friday, Russell, when you indignantly pointed out to me that none of your money comes from the taxpayer? Perhaps it had slipped your mind.”

“I've been thinking about this the last couple of days, Russell, and I can honestly say that the only other people ever to talk to me the way you did were school bullies. It's been nearly a quarter of a century since I had to deal with such bastards, so I was caught quite off my guard. Nice company you're keeping. Now I think about it, they used to ruin my lunchtimes too.”

I'm in two minds, I'm not a fan of his, think he sounds a bit daft when he talks etc. But at least he's trying to stand up for something, same way conviction (not career) politicians used to.

Not saying you have to agree / disagree with his stance, but sometimes good to see someone with a stance.

However the tax points the open letter writer comes up with are decent ones, same as the stars like Bono, Geldoff, Barlow telling us to spend our money when they use the tax avoidance stuff (or so it is reported anyway)

I saw this for the first time yesterday, it made me laugh, Russell Brand's speech at the GQ awards https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjAvBlqmKkM

Contracted, I assume, I did a job for Texas (that became Homebase) (think they were called Texas, or something anyway) but wasn't employed by them.

I like the guy, he's a tad too left for me in some ways, but he's just a comedian at heart, I think considering that fact he's using his fame for more good than most fake shallow brainless celebs do, or could, I think it's a good precedent and hopefully other influential people will feel brave enough to follow suit and talk about and draw attention to the seriously fucked up elephants in the room in this country and beyond that politics and the media are constantly trying to distract from with lies, bias, and pointless shit. He's not perfect by any means, but I feel he's genuine, which is worth a lot these days.

My mate met him in the Occupy London thing, he had one of those Anonymous masks on top of his head, he said 'alright' to her, she said she was just frozen with nerves and couldn't reply lol

It's 'funny' how comedians, like Bill Hicks and George Carlin etc. can get right to the heart of what's fucked up with the world, but instead of depressing you they can present it in a funny way that lets you take it on board and think, but in a way that takes some of the edge off and makes it a form of enlightening entertainment. It's a strange combination, comedy and tragedy.

not sure Brand has the comic side of it down to be honest, he was thrashed by Jeremy Paxman asking just a few elementary and basic questions.

It's tough for multi millionaires (not criticising, well done :1: ) to come over as men of the people.

He is just a materialistic jealous guy, of the guys in the City that earn lots more money than he does.

The secret is to enjoy life through the eyes of not wanting, or being bothered about what someone else earns, or has. The day you start worrying about what others have in life - is the day you have allowed money to control you. I like the verses in the song Maybe tomorrow;

Think I'll walk me outside
And buy a rainbow smile
But be free
They're all free

I look around at a beautiful life
Been the upperside of down
Been the inside of out
But we breathe
We breathe

I wanna breeze and an open mind
I wanna swim in the ocean
Wanna take my time for me
All me

I think the guys in City with millions in bank, snorting Coke off the toilet bowl don't quite see it, they some how miss it all. I like the wry smile from the guy lying in the street with his bottle of cider, as he watches these guys stressed and in a panic as they rush from one place to the next. Its nice to sit on the park bench and just watch the world unfold & taking time out to see the stars in the night sky. Russell Brand has lost it, his life is now encapsulated with materialism.

Don't get me wrong - of course you need money...But some people just go way over the top to the extremity of being jealous & bitter. To the extent of campaigning because you think the rich guy has too much. Who cares if Bono has advisers on how best to avoid paying tax - maybe he doesn't want his earned money going into the hands of the Governments. Maybe he would prefer to help a child in need privately and using his own free will, instead of being forced by corrupt governments.

Lets take the average fan on here; If you had the choice to pay £20 to the government in tax, or give that £20 to a child this Christmas - what would rather do?

Privatisation is the only way to achieve freedom for the people - less govern = more freedom to decide where your money goes.

We do see things so different GT. Fascinating!

I don't think most of the bankers are earning what he does for his films. I am quite sure he's made an absolute fortune, no real idea why, he's not my cup of tea (that's beside the point though)

I don't think he's jealous at all and do you not agree the greed and the ridiculous actions of the bankers at the top (not every day bankers) and the toxic debt and the gambling mentality of the way the banks were run forced us all into a very deep and horrible recession?

Not sure how anyone can disagree actually, it's what happened. I know for a fact how it impacted on me, it ruined a big deal we had lined up!

And again, I'd disagree with your take on 'less govern'... whether it is commercial organisations or government, we are all pulled along by our short and curlies and dance to their tune not matter how much we kick and scream and rile against.

Brand spouts the typical opposition politics that we used to see from Labour when the Tories had a safe majority and the Tories used to spout when Labour had a safe majority. It's all criticism and no substantial solutions other than pie in the sky, wishfull ideas.

It's easy to preach when you have no responsibility for the here and now but the picture is not so black and white for those that do have to deal with actually running things. He sounds a bit like I did when I was in my early 20s, it's the angry young man syndrome, which he really should have grown out of by now.

Thing is we have UKIP on the one end

it's the foreigners what dunnit

We have him on the other

it's the bankers and the rich innit

The truth is never that simple and as you say Northy (and just where the f*** have you been without written permission btw?! :17: ) nothing is ever that unspecified colour v unspecified colour (black and white as you put it)

Sorry about being AWOL Mr Fear Sir, life has been happening, work and stuff. Add to that the depressive nature of things at AVFC and it's not been too tempting to dedicate much time to our mutual place of worship.

The Fear - 17/12/2014 15:01

It's tough for multi millionaires (not criticising, well done :1: ) to come over as men of the people.

Yeah, it's impossible almost, yet if he had the same kind of money and responsibility as most people, he couldn't do his thing nearly as much, catch 22.

It must be a thankless job anyway, you've got the behemoth establishment machine on one side, and a lot of knockers on the other too, the side he is trying to stand up for ironically.

No wonder he looked pale on QT, trying to compete with all that must be impossibly frustrating.

He's a better man than me for sure, I'd give up on the people in no time, most are just dumb cattle anyway let's be honest, I'd leave them all to it and enjoy my life and money if I was him, I'm not going to lie!

Aye, I tell you what mate, the impact is noticeable. Obviously it then impacts my favourite playground, off topic.

Still, it's no different to down at the game, not so many mates there any more, not so much of a good crack, far fewer fans full stop.

Only positive is parking is easier...! Was out last night and myself and another season ticket holder were the last out of a table of six and we both agreed it was more of a chore than a joy. I think the other lad might well not bother next season, I've got this 'it's what I do' and also running the site etc but....................

The guy is an idealist plonk head. I don't like using a word like plonk head as it is nothing but being derogatory to him, in a rude way, without a proper word.

I can't think of a term to sum up the guy other than what I said, so it stays. If I think of a better 1, I will edit.

Enjoyed the letter to him. It was funny

Is an opinion from someone that has never met a City Banker valid? Brand and GT are both at fault here.

There are as many generalisations here as with any group. A select few might be corrupt and have earned millions they are not entitled to, but there are also many, many that deserve every penny.

It's not a life I would enjoy, or choose, so good luck to them.
