The teen’s parents told Manatee County deputies that their son had been trying to shoot animals getting in the trash outside their home. They heard a gunshot from their bedroom, and then the teen came back inside, saying he had shot himself.

What the hell is a 15 year old doing with a gun?

Shut up then lol

Farm background isn't it - I bet your old man was supervising your rifle or shotty usage, or did he let your roam the grounds whilst he was in bed?

I wasn't allowed the shotgun on my own until much older, but my .22 was mine to terrorise every Squirrel with.

I did receive full and thorough tuition, and was only allowed it after I showed I could be trusted. In the main I just had a range set up in an enclosed yard, and did target shooting. I didn't know it was an Olympic sport, or I might have given it a go properly.

So slight difference then really, although a .22 shouldn't be argued with in normal circs!

But point remains you weren't allowed the shotty, this kid had access he clearly shouldn't have done by the parents own decision I can presume and had he a .22 rifle I doubt he'd have shot himself!

Only a BB handgun, but quite looking forward to giving the youngest a tour this summer with a target as the eldest loved it when I did it with her, and even the small kick back from a BB, having the chats of how fake Hollywood films etc are when you consider a proper bullet going through etc helped turn her cynical! lol

Treated like a sport, it's great for kids. My niece is 10, and she's got quite interested in archery. I love trying it out with her.

Done properly it teaches you self control, relaxation and maths. :19: :19: :19:

I'd love to get round to archery as I love that myself and wasn't too bad when I was kid about 50 years ago it feels.

But agree, do it properly and safely there are benefits although I disagree with the maths - it never helped me lol

(yes I'm ignoring that lol)

I played a lot of darts as well, and that is great for the subtraction. Nothing to do with the drinking, obviously.

Handguns are a different ballgame, as this kid seems to have been using one. Just read the full story, and I didn't realise he died. If it was too powerful for him, the recoil alone could easily injure him.

Stick with a .22.

Ha, I've more chance of shooting myself with a dart....I think I'd say I'm distinctly average at best on that front and I probably improve when drinking until the point I don't and go backwards very quickly.

I thought I put that in opening post - hence my annoyance at parents giving him free reign? Just way to risky, Christ early last year there was the Uzi teacher with a kid at some kind of camp who rushed in to try and protect the girl because she couldn't control the power and he ended up with three through the head - although he managed to knock her clear so it wasn't totally in vain.

But it's just mindless.
