Old Foes

Remember playing Halifax in FA cup at Springfield and there was heavy snow thought it would be abandoned and we won.
They were a big team to us then as they were in what is now L1 I think.
A memorable day for me.

Wasn't that game played with an orange ball and didn't Graham Oates score direct from a corner?

Didn't Graham Oates score direct from a corner in that game. Remember it was freezing

When we played Man City at Springy,
when we opened our 'New' Floodlights and if i'm right,
didn't City play most of their first team?

I remember Peter Barnes flying down the wing,
he was a very gifted player.

It was packed that night and the atmosphere was electric.

Coldest I can ever remember being at ‘pneumonia park (as my late brother referred to it) and I THINK Halifax played in a weird looking pale blue shirts orange shorts kit?

Billy Sutherland scored direct from the corner I believe ...(left wing corner facing Shevvy end)

Edit
Thinking about it ...would have made more sense fit Kenny Morris to have curled it in with the right foot from there ...but I THINK it was Billy Tank’

Just tried to look it up, but can only find the 2-1 score that we knew and the date 20/11/71. 49 years ago!! And we had a great day, just shows that you can enjoy games very much at whatever level and feel on top of the world after a win like that. But it would be almost a none event today

2 away trips stand out as being scary firstly Boston away in FA Trophy when Lee Koo scores in our 1-2 defeat we were chased back to the station bottles and bricks flying everywhere.
Secondly a night game at Witton Albion we were chatting away pre game to Tony Mcloughlin then after half time all the local nutters climbed over a wall and made a bee line for us. I had just passed my test and sware to god I had 8 in my cortina including a local girl who I copped off with at the game trying to escape ended bringing them all back except the girl that was scary lol

I was at the Boston game. Went by train with about fifty or sixty other fans. We got escorted back to the station by the police and ran the gauntlet of the Boston fans chucking everything they could at us. It wasn't even safe on the platform as the station had a level crossing gate and the neanderthals continued to pelt us with bottles and stones until the train departed.

If my memory of the day is right we won 1-0. The match was played on Saturday 13th of February. Can't for the life of me remember who scored.

I am 99% sure it was Grahm Oates who scored direct from a corner from The St Andrews Drive side at the Shevvy End.
I also seem to remember the other goal coming from a corner on the other side, but was knocked in by another player, I may be wrong with this though.

Memory must be playing tricks on me thought that it was 1973 mind you I spent the match at the bottle bar that used to be under the popular side stand drinking bottles of Barley wine in an effort to keep warm.

100% Graham Oates and a Shevvy End corner but swung in from opposite side of Pop side.
Cold afternoon indeed but colder in the replay against Tranmere in 1966. (Alfie Craig disallowed goal match) Played in a November blizzard. Remember being behind the goal Alfie scored in with the sleet and snow lashing into our faces.
Somehow you cant blame the Ref for cheating us by saying he had blown for time before the ball hit the back of the net. We've always been cheated!

I remember going to a lot of these Former League Clubs,
it just shows you how sad it is a when a Football Club can Fall,
mainly by Del-Boy type owners.

Please add to the list, if i've missed some.

Some memories there mate although very blurred after all these years.
Went to Hartlepool on the coach midweek in 1979 I think fogged off got back too late for last orders.

I became friends with Mark Neale who scored for Telford against us . I was living in Nuneaton at the time and he was a local lad who had played for a few of the non league clubs in the Midlands. I was wearing my Latics shirt and he came up to me and we became friends.
We have all lived in Nuneaton, well at least I have

Regarding Vale....FA cup 69 went to 1st and 3rd matches. Looking at details crowds were very good. 1st match at Springy 1-1 crowd 12,500 ish. Replay at Burslem 2-2 crowd just under 10k. 2nd replay at Old Trafford lost 1-0 crowd 16,500 ish. Lower league crowds in those days much better than now. All about the Premier league now.

Sorry Springy lad we replaced Southport so never played them in the league and you missed Yeovil. But some good old names in there and still have neetmares about Stockport when Kevin Francis played for them.
Watched Latins play at Southport sat in the old stand that burned down might have been a floodlit league match can't remember when.

The night we played Tranmere at Springy in the FA Cup,
it was a freezing night and was a blizzard of snow.

The players went off the pitch and we thought it would be
abandoned, but the players came back on, Tranmere scored.

We equalised at the last minute, i think it was Alf Craig who
scored, but the ref disallowed it, by saying by the time the ball
hit the net the ref had blown for full time.

I've never seen this decision since in a match i've watched.
