I think Carlos’ hands were more or less tied as he was left with a weak squad (in mind and body) due to poor recruitment and injuries, and went all defensive after low scoring Brighton put four past us, ending our ten match unbeaten run.
Ironic that midfield, which has always been our forte, was so weak with Fer injured, even with King (who turned out to be average at best) brought in to boost it.
There was nobody there who was a leader, nor a ball winner, and the recruitment of Mesa and Clucas was a disaster. There was little support for the forwards nor much protection for the defence, in which Olsson was disappointing compared to last season and ‘never stop a cross’ Naughton defensively weak as usual.
Now whilst these players were not good enough for the PL, some could possibly do a job in the Championship if there’s any left after the big bail out. It will need a strong manager and an exceptional recruitment drive and rebuild job to get us out of this downward spiral and hopefully do a Burnley and bounce straight back up.
The sad part of the whole affair was that we could have stayed up right to the end, and were one win away from doing it, against Southampton. Last season there were so many weak teams and any one from a whole bunch could have gone down instead of us. No wins in the last nine matches finally did for us.
