October Player Ratings: A Surprising Winner This Month

Whilst the majority of City fans will look back on October as a good month, some will feel it was an opportunity missed. On the positive side, the play-off challenge was maintained despite starting the month with three successive away games. The win at Chester was as unexpected as the defeat at Welling, although we should not have been surprised considering Welling's inexplicable record against us. The month ended with an opportunity to move into fourth place in the league with a win over promotion rivals Bromley; however, City were made to pay for some poor first-half finishing with a late soft goal from the dangerous Moses Emmanuel. Anyone fancy seeing him in red and white? But we are still just three points off the play-off zone with a game in hand, and most of us would have accepted that before the season started.

The FA Cup brought a very difficult Fourth Round Qualifying tie at National League rivals Tranmere, but City won through with two clean sheets and a replay victory at Sincil Bank. Next week's First Round tie at Whitehawk represents a great chance for City to move to within one step of that dream Third Round money-spinner at Old Trafford...

The average team score per game of 6.51 continues the monthly improvement so far, with the defence often dominating the individual scores. Four clean sheets from seven games is impressive by anyone's standards: can we make it five clean sheets in November?

So who did our members consider to be October's star players?

1. Greg Tempest 7.05
2. Bradley Wood, Craig Stanley 6.94
4. Paul Farman, Luke Waterfall 6.93
6. Matt Rhead 6.79
7. Callum Howe 6.70
8. Kegan Everington 6.63
9. Alan Power 6.59
10. Chris Bush 6.57
11. Terry Hawkridge 6.56
12. Lee Beevers 6.44
13. Matt Sparrow 6.43
14. Liam Hearn 6.10
15. Jack Muldoon 5.91
16. Alex Simmons 5.89
17. Conner Robinson 5.65
18. Kyle Wootton 4.70

So it is GREG TEMPEST, the forgotten man of Sincil Bank, who takes this month's accolade after his excellent debut start against Braintree. The caveat of course is that he only appeared twice, the other appearance being in the cup tie at Tranmere. BRADLEY WOOD topped supporter's votes for September and followed that up with joint second place in October despite missing a match due to a foolish red card at Welling. In joint second comes CRAIG STANLEY after his one appearance of the month; however, we will all be glad to see this important midfield cog back in the City engine room, hopefully starting at Whitehawk on Saturday.

Individual ratings by match:

Guiseley: Matt Rhead 7.44
Chester: Bradley Wood 9.00
Welling: Matt Rhead 8.00
Braintree: Terry Hawkridge 7.71
Tranmere (A): Paul Farman 8.00
Tranmere (H): Luke Waterfall 7.43
Bromley: Paul Farman 8.30

So where does that leave us regarding the current player of the season standings?

1. Paul Farman, Matt Rhead 7.09
3. Bradley Wood 7.05
4. Chris Bush 6.75

Home player of the season:

1. Paul Farman 7.29
2. Matt Rhead , Bradley Wood 7.16
4. Chris Bush 6.79

Away player of the season:

1. Bradley Wood, Matt Rhead 6.96
3. Paul Farman 6.70
4. Chris Bush 6.68

So we have the same four players taking the top four spots in each category; will November be the month when someone else starts to challenge? Terry Hawkridge, Luke Waterfall and Callum Howe are closing in fast.

And will November be the month we make it to the top 5 - at last?

That's 14 players scoring 6 points or higher average. Good on Tempest for having two good games. Need to see more of him to assess properly.
