A new generation of drugs could change the way depression is treated

..........................................................................................................................

IT STARTED out as LY110141. Its inventor, Eli Lilly, was not sure what to do with it. Eventually the company found that it seemed to make depressed people happier. So, with much publicity and clever branding, Prozac was born. Prozac would transform the treatment of depression and become the most widely prescribed antidepressant in history. Some users described it as “bottled sunshine”. It attained peak annual sales (in 1998) of $3 billion and at the last count had been used by 54m people in 90 countries. And, along the way, it embedded into the public consciousness a particular idea about how depression works—that it is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, which the drug corrects. Unfortunately, this idea seems to be only part of the story.

In science it is good to have a hypothesis to frame one’s thinking. The term “chemical imbalance” is just such a thing. It is a layman’s simplification of the monoamine hypothesis, which has been the prevalent explanation for depression for almost 50 years. Monoamines are a class of chemical that often act as messenger molecules (known technically as neurotransmitters) between nerve cells in the brain. Many antidepressive drugs boost the level of one or other of these chemicals. In the case of Prozac, the monoamine in question is serotonin

Tyson Fury was using cocaine but I don't think it helps.

I've no idea how depression works but surprisingly, it seems that the drug companies don't either.

It might Sasquatch, depending on the type of depression. However in this case I will stick to medical drugs as my depression is caused by PTSD (on going life that came to a head in the early millennium. I will always have to take the meds I am on to keep the balance as what I have been through in life is far and beyond''social'' depression.

Our 2nd son also has bipolar which needs to be managed by meds. He is on Praedal (lithium) Bipolar is a sever chemical imbalance which is not just about extreme depression highs and lows. It is all about the extreme strange and weird behaviour.

I have no doubt that this and a.n other holistic/alternative drugs will work for some. However it depends on the case

A severe vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to deep depression, paranoia and delusions, memory loss & incontinence amongst many other things. Its a difficult vitamin to find in foods, especially if one is a vegetarian.

Foods high in B12 would include clams, mussels and liver. Sometimes when I'm feeling down or lethargic I will knock up a huge bowl of clams in garlic and white wine.

There is also a supplement called SAME which can also help hugely with those suffering with depression.

Marmite on toast each day for breakfast will sort out a B12 deficiency.

I would highly recommend finding a good hypnotherapist in your area. Many are skilled in pdsd and could be a life changer.

Marmite on toast each day for breakfast will sort out a B12 deficiency.

But the the thought of eating Marmite each day will make you want to kill yourself.

Thank you but no thank you Sasquatch. I have done the therapy, in long term recovery and hypnotherapy will not help that or my other medical conditions such as fibromyalgia/M.E also known as CFS and the threads.

I do have monthly reflexology to help with symptoms. I know your trying to be helpful Sasquatch however there is a time for balance of when you need medical impute or/and a balance of natural/alternative/holistic treatment.

Having lived with all this for many many years I have a good idea of what will help. Hypnotherapy is not for me nor do I believe it works. It's the power of suggestion it works by. My therapy has worked far better than any hypnotherapy can work.

However like anything. The scars fade though still stay. I will always live with the aftermath, however re mental health I have learnt to manage it rather than it manage me

No such thing as 'social' depression.

Depression is depression if it is clinical depression we are talking about.

Doesn't matter what triggers it, it's vile.

It depends on the way you are looking at it and what profession you are, to how you use it. I need to be more accurate with that term.

It was a terminology told me by a psychiatrist. What they meant by that is there is social & diagnosed mental health issues.

In that context they mean diagnosed as bipolar, schizophrenia, addiction, OCD type etc. By social they mean those caused by life circumstances

Clinical depression is a chemical imbalance. Sounds to me the mind shrink had too many definitions for the same thing.

It doesn't matter what triggers it, not all depressions are triggered by anything either. It is still a clinical depression.

Anything else is 'just' being down, fed up etc (which can also stink if bad enough)

Not being pedantic, but the modern world drives me nuts with all this talk.

Ha, and then I searched and my unquestionable genius was proved right.

Social... anxiety...

It's not surprising, given the established relationship between depression and anxiety. When it comes to social anxiety disorder (SAD) in particular, feelings of anxiety and worry about being around others can eventually evolve into feeling down in general.

I'm a newly qualified hypnotherapist and it does work. I had it myself and treated for anxiety and I've seen many people sussesfully treated. However it's not for anyone and if you believe it won't work it probably won't. Also people are often not willing or capable of addressing the key issue because it's to painful. CBD would also help. I'm not suggesting it's a cure but you would make a difference and worth trying it imo. At worse you will have other health benefits from it.

Hey Kefkat

Are you aware that they are trialing MDMA to treat PTSD?

Joe rogan had a guy on his podcast last year (sorry I cannot remember the name of the guest) and he was raving about the results

Food for thought

Last time I read up on this they were finding poor results. It had been tried on some ex US military with PTSD with very mixed results.

I also dont want anyone in control of me with hypnotism. I know alot of people who have had hypnotherapy. It hasn't worked for them.

As I said the key issues (as there was a lifetime of them) have been addressed with intense psychotherapy and specialised therapy.

I know my history and that is what I needed. Believe me my story is like something out of a novel. You couldn't make it up.

There were area's I needed to go into which I didn't even know myself until I went into intense therapy. Hypnotherapy wouldn't have worked cos you need to know what you are dealing with to beable to treat it.

I know your trying to be helpful Sasquatch so I thank you for that
