not much excitement !

I also remember League Cup defeats to Blackburn and Newcastle, both at home, and a defeat to Chelsea away in the League Cup - we also lost to Man City in the League Cup around the time of that Arsenal game and lost a cracker to Chelsea at home live on Sky in the FA Cup, but the last two might have just been before the Arsenal one - some stattos may know or be able to find out.

I had to wait 10 years for my first game v top division opposition - Newcastle in 1976. Compared to the 60's/70's/80's (WBA aside) the last 20 years have been great for drawing top teams.

The three chelsea cup games came quite quickly, 99/00, 00/01 and 02/03, to the point that I didn't bother with Chelsea away in the league cup which was the last one.

Utterly forgot about the Newcastle, Blackburn and City games, all of which were home.

I stand by that the last time we had a really good away cup tie was Arsenal 14 years ago basically, turns out we've been ridiculously lucky with getting home fixtures vs prem sides since then.

Can't see a mention of the cup victory over Coventry our first win against a top flight club. Now that was exciting.

Cheer up Jock you miserable bugger! I'm excited because there's the slight chance we can bloody the nose of a Premiershit team. It's a no lose situation for us while all the Spurs fans i know are worried that, after years of lording their top flight status over me, I might get the last laugh.

As to it being just the League Cup (or Careless Cup as was known until recently) I loved watching us beat Pompey, have fun with Jason Brown when he came back with Blackburn as well as the other matches we've played against top flight teams in either cup competition. It's one of the bonuses of being a lower league supporter and made all the sweeter when we cause an upset (Bertie Bossu, Trigger's goal) or potential upset (Wenger panicking and chucking on Henry and Pires, Simeon's goal against Villa). All good times.
