My neighbours just knocked on my door, they have a new tablet.

They want to download norton mobile virus protection but it insists that you have a google account.

I couldn't see a way around it.

Very naughty that. Not that a google account does any harm ( I would register it with a hotmail or whatever that I don't use regularly ) but the principle of it is naughty, you have bought one product and to use it they make you take another.
 
Google accounts are free and you need them to download anything from the Play store. I don't see the problem to be honest, no different to Apple app store and iTunes as far as I can see.

 
There are other app stores out there for Android, SlideMe for example. It might be on there but guess what, you have to register there too so I don't see the difference.

Ah right, yes, good point,would have been an app. Pre-loaded but yes, they would still need to activate.
