Nico Otamendi 2016-17

Alert Team
I've been getting worried about Ota. I thought he had ironed out diving in. Saw him get an earful off Pep during the run of 10 wins but I thought he was bobbins against the rags.

Anyone agree?

He was ok 'til Kompany went off, he went into berserker mode after that. Still scares the shit out of me, makes some excellent tackles and interceptions but then does the daftest things, his play acting gets on my nerves too if I'm honest.

I think there's a very good defender in him but he needs babysitting.

I mentioned this a few times its ok to go sliding in if you win the ball but you have to be 100%, Nico has not been doing this and leaving us wide open.

I am sure we are not the only ones to spot this in his game.

If he keeps carrying on like he was against that lot and does a foul like Pogba did, he's gonna get sent. Which makes him a potential liability.

What is it with us and centre halves?

As anyone got Alan Kernaghan's number?

Every player is a potential liability IF they do something stupid.
He's made 37 PL appearances for us with 0 red cards

They are fine if he has cover behind him but rarely has, but he is not the one that loses the ball in the first place. We lose it to some sloppy passing, which precipitates otamendi into some desperate defending.

He should still try and stay on his feet though

His performances seem to be the ones that fluctuate the most. Fair point that Bluedub makes about the second half on Wednesday, yet I felt he was one of our best in Barcelona.

He gets outmuscled too easily for someone from a country that you wouldn't expect that to happen to.

Hard to get a player to instil the same confidence in him that you had in VK. Reading that again it doesn't sound right but you know what I mean I'm sure. :008:

Agreed. he seems to have this ability to play great in one half and crap in the next. It's weird how his head seems to 'go' for no obvious reason :002:

His decision making is poor from his constant tendency to go to ground to the way he sold himself on the halfway line before the second (?) goal.

Why can't we find a decent centre back pairing?

I am convinced this is one our fundamental problems

For a supposed tough guy he gets pushed off the ball far too easy at times, he was like a rag doll again today on Costa's goal, where's Mangala when you need him?

By the end of December PG will know what we will be looking to buy in the Summer. I have highlighted the fact that Nico goes to ground and cannot then recover

He was a good player but is too slow nowadays.
I'm sure that is why he goes to ground so easily after a run.
Our defence has needed tuning up since VK began his run of injuries but we don't have the players. Stones needs guidance, in some situations he gets himself lost and no one is there to have a chat.
Zaba does his best but is too slow also.
Kolarov and Clichy are getting paid for, hang on, let me think......nope! Can't come up with anything.
