Next Labour leader must be a woman, says Harriet Harman

Vital Football Legend
The next Labour leadership election should be fought between only female candidates, Harriet Harman has said.
The party's former deputy leader called on men to go further than sitting out of the contest and to actively back women for the top job.

No they should be human and credible and honest Harriet....one step at a time Mrs Discrimination.

Ridiculous.

More identity politics. I'm all for equality, for gender, race, sexuality etc. but this is nonsense. This kind of rubbish doesn't solve the problems.

I prefer the old way of whoever is most fit for the job.

Exactly.

Never rule someone out because they are a woman, black, asian whatever.

But don't (especially not at Government level for Christ sake) discriminate for effect.

There's enough dickheads and ***** in politics to begin with - don't promote somebody for the hell of it.

The issue is 'if you're good enough' and yes a lot of people have a way to go when it comes to that belief, and a lot of companies have a way to go in fair pay...but has Harriet thought of how the country would react to 'a leadership race should only be white men' reaction?

She hasn't and she'd be in uproar...so why is 'women only' acceptable?

And then...break it down?

Only white women?
Only English white women?
Only UK white women?
Only ethnic minorities?
Should we only consider LGBT + MOT as that tag gets longer every week?

Can we only vote for somebody who ticks every box (how?)

Does my head in, this kind of rent a quote approach does more harm than good.

Love, loath, shag, marry or kill Thatch got their on her own steam. Let the next one, whether you agree or not with policy or decisions, Thatch earned it. Let the next one.

Boils my piss mate.

And it's everywhere now. I read when Emma Stone was presenting the best director at the Oscars she said "they're should be more women in the best director category" to rapturous applause no doubt.

Why? Because there just has to be woman there? How about you get there on merit instead?

No doubt there's less women directors than men, but why? Is it because they're not given the opportunity or is it because maybe women are less inclined to become directors than men?

We were recently told in college by our programming tutor that in the event we're in an interview for a tech job, say me, another guy and a female, that even if me and the other guy are far more qualified, she will get the job instead. Because there's not enough women in the tech industry. Again, research will back up the fact that there are reasons less women are inclined to go in that direction, because guess what? Men and women are drawn to different things!! What a revelation in 2018!!

This radical lefty liberal bullshit is taking us down a seriously dark path where logic and reason don't matter any more.

The question has to be, why don't they get there on merit? It should be 50/50. Women are just as capable as men in most jobs, and the fact they go down different routes is as much down to society as it is genes.

We need to sort out the fundamentals, then stories like this won't exist.

This obsession with equality is doing my head in. It's really gone too far. Best person for the job, and if that person is black, white, male, female, gay, straight I couldn't give damn.
Similar experience to SJH last week. This really got my back up.

Junior 1 is trying to sort out his work experience for this school year. He has a couple of things ongoing to do. One of them was working with a different science based company everyday for a week to gain a taste of various fields within the science industry. This is run by a partnership of various companies in our local area which happens to be rich in such companies. He is very scientific and was approached by his school to apply which he did very quickly. Last week he came home to tell me that the companies involved have informed the school that they are only willing to take female pupils for the work experience to encourage females getting into the science industry
Wtf !!.
I was fuming . What kind of message does this send to 15 year old boy?, why should a dead keen 15 year old boy have to cope with this sort of positive discrimination over bloody school work experience?. Do I really need to explain to my lad that in this country as a white middle class male he will suffer this sort of thing when he is out in the real world?. Does wonders for his motivation -not, and I can't disagree with him. I emailed the school and admittedly it's not their fault but actually they agreed with my sentiment and forwarded my email to the companies involved.
:arrghh:

They're going about it all wrong, aren't they, Melon. As I say, you need to address the cause, not the symptom. All their solution gets you is poorer scientists.

We need more girls doing science at school, and it being acceptable socially, and then you get the best of both worlds.

I demand that the next Labour leader be an active member of Vital Villa who lives in Kuala Lumpur.

Yes I am in the best person for the job regardless category.

South Africa had terrible problems when the introduced quotas for their cricket team , and they lost many very good players who moved abroad because of it. KP being amongst them.

Hopefully youngster gets sorted Melon!

Yup, the motive is right and I don't disagree with it, but the practice is wrong and Harmon doesn't help things with wibbles like this.

Thing is Heath, it'll probably never be 50/50 in any field of work for the simple fact that men and women are different. It's almost a crime to say that these days but it's true.

Women are just as capable in most jobs, but in general men and women veer towards different things. It's just nature. Women are doing brilliantly in the medical sector, but no one mentions that. There are plenty of women working the tech sector, so how did they get there? Hard work and qualifications, just like any man has to. There are no obstacles, we're not living in the past anymore.

You're right, we need to sort out the fundamentals, but a good place to start would be that men and women are different. There are far more similarities than differences, but there are differences. Why is that such an issue these days? Men are no better than women and vice versa, just different.

It is discrimination Melon, and it's disgusting.

Again, down to identity politics. It's an absolute joke. What a way to solve our problems.

Yes, white people have had it better than most throughout our fucked up history. White males? Even better!

But what does your son have to do with any of that? Why should he have to pay the consequences of what has gone on before?

I think comedian Doug Stanhope referred to it as "dead peoples baggage". And that's just what it is.

What an idiotic world we live in.

It's only nature because our society says it is. In cultures where men and women are treated the same, both can fill the same roles. The longer I went in my Maths education, the fewer women were in my class. It's not that they couldn't do it, but that they felt they didn't want to.

To change it, we would have to alter everything. TV, radio, books, adverts. We are different, but not that much. It's not going to happen any time soon, but women are fighting back.

The solution we don't need is quotas. They just don't work, and we end up with poorer people in the positions where we need our best.

I think we need to be careful not to discriminate against, however I agree with much above, I don't like positive discrimination either.

It's meant to be the best person for the job.

I do agree that mostly, men and women can do the same jobs. The question is do they want to?

Society does play a part, obviously a lot more historically, but given freedom of choice would you expect men and women to pursue the same interests equally?

Out of curiosity, why do you feel there was less women in your class the longer you went on in your maths education? Why do you think they felt they didn't want to go further?

By all means change attitudes....we're nowhere near the point of both sexes equally going for identical careers and I don't see why that shouldn't happen, but shoehorning women into so called men's jobs (just like shoehorning men into so called women's jobs) for political gain can only serve a purpose IF they are appropriately the best person for the job.

If they are crack on.

If not, don't fill a quota - it's not fair to either.

Positive discrimination has served it's purpose, it changed outlooks...now we move past that and deal with the next stage on all fronts for me whether that be sex, gender, race, whatever.....move to merit and potential.
