New Second Hand Car Recommendations

It's that time of the decade again where I am looking for a new old car. So this time around I'm looking for a 5 to 7 seater, reliable, plenty of boot space. So good folk of Vital any recommendations or warnings to stay clear?

I'm not up on 7 seaters but Mondeos are a good car, I ran one without a hitch for 120k miles huge boot on the hatchback. The estate is good too.

Transit van with camping seats?

If you really want a sensible answer my old man's got a Zafira (no idea on year but not spanking new - had it maybe 6-7 years). Good motor, good poke in acceleration, seats 7 although back two you bounce around alot with the suspension - so I have to put up with it thesedays when it's full lol

Boot gets our shopping in plus dad's when we go, so basically food for 6 for a fortnight, and he's had no major reliability issues, repair, wear and tear even though it was second/third hand when he picked it up.

Best value for money is a Zafira by a country mile, they come in cheaper than pretty much all the competition and the build quality is great. I drive a Zafira myself and I would never buy a 1.6 petrol, I had one as a hire car once and hated it, it was not until I tried a diesel that buying a Zafira became an option for me but now I think it's a great car. However, if you take price out of the equation both the Touran and the Smax are better cars imo, their engines are both more economical and more powerful and both offer a nice driving experience.

I'd avoid the Sharan if I was you, big yes but the seats don't fold into the floor and they have some mechanical issues. The Espace is French - 'nough said. The Voyager has a silly configuration where the 3 seater bench passengers have less space available than the two individual seats in front of them - perhaps ok if you just want a 6 seater but not good for 7 and it's the middle seats that fold into the floor, not the back seats so you don't get the option of a big boot.

If you can afford it though, the SantaFe is a great car, lovely to drive and the seats in the back are big enough to accommodate adults (if they can manage to climb into them that is), not just kids. The thing is, the older SantaFes were typical older Hyundais so I'd avoid them, meaning that you would need to splash out on something a bit newer, not more than max. 4-5 years would be my advice.

I always liked the look of the Mazda 5 but a colleague of mine has one and has had loads of trouble with it.

So ultimately, as always, it's a trade off. My advice is that it comes down to a choice between 4 options, value for money and a good car, Zafira, pure quality of car, Touran or Smax or the best of the lot, SantaFe.

Note that the Smax is basically a variation on the Mondeo

Nissan Qashqai mate, end of.

I have a 5 seater Qashqai. 7 years old, 130k on the clock and still going strong. Never had any issues with it.

Mate has a Qashqai + 2 (the 7 seater version) and he is also very happy with it.

DO NOT BUY FRENCH!!!

Qashqai +2 looks to have less space for the two seats at the back than the others.

I now have a Nissan XTrail which is has loads of room front and back but it's the new one, can't speak for the previous model

Nothing wrong with my Citroen Xsara Picasso you bunch of anti French Europhobes !!!

I bought it with 14,000 miles on the clock and now we are up to 110,000 and hardly ever had a problem with it.

We are looking at upgrading to the C4 model.

So there.

Wurzel could you please give a rough price guide for what you are looking for.

This will help narrow down the available cars....

I was looking the other day and saw this

People who have Ford C Max's swear by them.

Big car with a small running cost.

Upto about £12000. Thanks for all the replies. It doesn't have to be a 7 seater. I couldn't buy French or a Vauxhall, sorry. I like German or Japanese.

Yes I like Fords, they drive well. I was more thinking of the Smax or Kuga.

I've never heard a bad name said about Qashqai's and they are made over here. I agree about French cars as they seem to be prone to electrical failures. I used to have a S Max and it was a good car and great to drive, never let me down.
