New Laptop Suggestions

The Fear

A Wise Man (once sat next to him)
Right, part of my arm problem might be being made worse by using the tablet (and phone) all the time so might well go back to having a laptop when not using desktop.

Any suggestions of a decent, not too big, laptop that would be worth getting? Mostly only surfing the net etc as one would on a tablet.

I'd recommend taking a look at the Lenovo range JF. Obviously don't know what specification you need, but mine is very reliable. I bought mine at PC World in Poole back in November 2013 and never had a problem with it. Reasonably priced too.

I'm in the middle of a Which? trial at the moment so had a look at what they recommend.

The only 'Best Buys' they have other than MacBooks are -

Asus ZenBook UX series - £672
Dell XPS 13 - £1,185
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon - £925
HP Spectre x360 13-4009na - £890
Dell Latitude 12 7000 series - £1,320
Google Chromebook Pixel (2015) - £799
Lenovo Yoga 2 series - £744
HP ProBook 650 G1 series - £695

What is the most important from the following and I'll narrow that down further? -

Ease of use
Overall performance
Screen quality
Speaker sound quality
Portability
Battery
Features

If its a tablet replacement I'm gonna guess portability and battery are the 2 most important?

In which case Which? recommend these -

Dell XPS 13 - £1,185
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon - £925
Dell Latitude 12 7000 series - £1,320

Looks a decent and nice thin one Col8, cheers

Interesting the Asus comes up amongst best buys then Deano, not same model but shows the make is ok.

Don't want to spend too much, I had a nice one but me being me, let mom have it, can't now ask for it back!

Really want something thin (like that asus) and probably those specs would do really, main power is on my desktop.

Based purely on battery and portability, ignoring everything else, you can get some real bargains.

Acer C720 - £159
Lenovo N20P Chromebook - £149

Both of those get 5 out of 5 for battery and portability from Which? (Thats better than the expensive ones above).

Only reason they are cheap seems to be the screen quality (both get 3 out of 5).

So if you're not to bothered about that then they look great.

Or if you'd like a slightly better screen quality but willing to compromise on speaker quality then -

Acer CB5-311 Chromebook - £179
Asus C300M Chromebook - £159

Actually, those chromebooks might fit the bill and are nice and cheap. Not too worried on speakers, like a nice screen.

If you are thinking about a chromebook I would recommend this:

ASUS C300MA 13.3-inch Chromebook (Intel Celeron N2830 2.42GHz, 2GB RAM, 32GB Storage, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Integrated Graphics, Google Chrome)

I have had one for about 10 months and it's really good with a 13.3 inch screen which is one of the bigger chroomebooks and it's very lightweight and portable. Battery life is very good and it's easy and great to take with you anywhere.

I also have a lenovo Z50 with Intel Core i7 and it's very fast! Only problem with Lenovo is they come with lots of bloatware which you are advised to remove.

Good luck.

Might well go with the Asus, Curry's have it £15 cheaper as well.

Looks enough for what I need I think!

I have a Dell XPS for work. Very thin! Powerful and never had a problem with it. As an added bonus the touch screen flips over to form a larger tablet type device all be it Windows.

Think for once I will go a bit cheaper, it's mostly for knocking about on at night, surfing, emails etc as opposed to anything 'heavy' work wise which I do at my desk on desktop anyway.

AVCHD Video (.MTS) would still be playable on a chromebook wouldn't it? I use windows media player at the moment for these (Juan's training vids!)
