Premier League, EFL & FA introduce new player behaviour rules

Starting this season, red cards will be issued to players who confront match officials and use offensive language or make gestures towards them.

I think you are right BD, but the harassment of referees seems to have got worse without a ref making a point and sending someone off for it, if that occurs this season will it open a can of worms, because we all want consistency, but will we get it.

Can the players be disciplined within themselves to accept decisions, I hope they can, you dont get it in Rugby either forms and it is brilliant to see. they may question it by the Captain who is given an explanation, but also video replays to get the right result also helps.

when will football join the 21st century and embrace technology

The rules have been clarified - dissent and foul no abusive language were always offences (yellow & red respectively) but they were a bit vague (well for dissent at least) and not enforced. The result has been a classic "give them an inch, and they will take a mile" situation.

The behaviour by players has deteriorated and plumbed new depths with them visibly swearing at officials (clear to see on tv) and never being sanctioned for it.

Might be 10 v 9 for a few weeks but the players (via their managers) will get it in the end. IF the referees have the guts to follow through......

The new descriptions are a bit more specific:-

Offences which could earn players a yellow card

Visibly disrespectful behaviour to any match official

An aggressive response to decisions

Confronting an official face to face

Running towards an official to contest a decision

Offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures towards match officials

Physical contact with any match official in a non-aggressive manner

A yellow card for at least one player when two or more from a team surround a match official

New red card offences

If a player confronts match officials and uses offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures towards them

Physical contact with match officials in an aggressive or confrontational manner
