Musical theatre/ live comedy gigs

Eweimps

Vital 1st Team Regular
Me again, not sure how much interest there will be but as football discussions are obviously limited at the moment here we go....
Has anyone seen anyone decent, for me it was...(not all my first choices but enjoyed all the same)

Jethro ( Cornish comedian). Very funny

Rock of Ages
Bat out of Hell the musical
The Commitments
Mama Mia
School of Rock

Andre Rieu a few times, always good value.

I think my music tastes may not suit many on here, some obscure bands to say the least. But I really enjoyed The Silencers back in the day, around 87/88 @The Vorst National Brussels. They were supporting Simple Minds who I went to see but was blown away by the Silencers, really really good and ended up buying a CD or two. Painted Moon, Scottish Rain which was about the Chernobyl disaster to name but two.

In a similar vein to bristol with Tim Vine saw Milton Jones last year. Such rapid fire delivery you can easily miss 2 or 3 cracking puns because you are laughing at the one he's just made.

We saw Graffiti traffic at a local arts centre. Hard to describe classical music meets comedy weirdly good.

Best gig is Ben Harper and the innocent criminals Astoria 2003 excellent

I also managed to see Lee Evans play at Wolverhampton Civic in the 90's which was hilarious. This was before he went to the really big venues which comedy isn't really suited to IMO.
Wolves Civic is similar size to the Theatre Royal for comparison.

Also saw Paul Merton do a gig there which was funny in a more subtle way

I did see a “classic spectacular “ at the Royal Albert Hall which was a really enjoyable introduction to that genre for us ( took my mum for a birthday treat). Not my usual music by a long chalk but I knew a lot of the stuff and a great view/venue
The show culminated with the 1812 overture complete with the Moscow State Militia with muskets and two artillery pieces high up in the roof. Absolutely deafening

Unfortunately my missus loves Musicals at the theatre and in order to get day release points for City matches I have had to endure quite a few of these over the years. Just before lock down it was The Sound of Music which was mildly tolerable but a few weeks before that was Joseph and his frilly top which was just horrible. Just detest Andrew LLoyd Webber stuff where all they do is bleeding sing. At least the Sound of Music one had some breaks where they just talk

l was dragged kicking and screaming to see Cats which I found quite boring ( wife loved it though) Found myself thinking....one song, you’ve only got one song....

I'm not mad-keen on stand-up. Partly because a lot of it is only mildly amusing at best, but mainly because it has colonised theatres and other arts venues to such an extent that it's now pretty difficult to see a straight play production these days, which I really enjoy.

I guess it's cheap to put on sells well with the "yoof" especially.

Been to a few festies -

3 Hawkfests

2 Hawktoberfests

1 Hawkeaster

Many Hawkwind gigs, first one in 1981, latest last year

Nine Cosmic Puffins, three SRS, three OBTC, four blindcat, four equinox paradox, 2 Eastern Haze, a Moonfest and several others too... Love all of these type of small festies, lots of great folks and good bands who will spend time with folk too...

Biggest gigs have to be:

Runrig at Edinburgh Castle (played the castle concourse, where the tattoo is held - seen that too...)

Rush at Newcastle Arena

Edinburgh and Inverness tattoos.

Smallest gigs must be Lucy's Drowning in several pups around the North East and Anubis at the Old Wharf in Birmingham for Rock Against Child Porn...

Definitely chomping at the bit to get to more, had at least four festies lined up for this year...

Just been uploading my music pics to Amazon as a backup (unlimited photo storage with Prime).

600GB and counting....

Surprisingly, probably the most professional act we have seen is Roy Castle. Went with bro in law and wife who lived in Leicester, and we were all a bit sceptical. Saturday night at Baileys. He had the audience in his hand from start to finish - brilliant entertainer

Stewart Lee, however, is different class...

And the dress rehearsal for the opening of the Olympics 2012. The only thing we didn’t see was the Queen bit which was kept close hold until the actual opening ceremony I believe. Although a dress rehearsal it was absolutely fantastic.
