Muirfield & Womens Golf

So just because I want open a hornets nest, what do people think about Muirfields decision not to admit women as members [and I stress members] and the predictable outcry from women golfers who complain about the inequality in the prize money between the mens game and theirs. True to form that snp 'woman' has come out screaming.

OK, I'll bite. Why don't over a third of the members want women to join? What is the logic?

Also they have been banned from hosting The Open in future whilst this policy is in place.

I am a middle of the road woman. My own view is this is 2016 not 1916. They still have I suspect much older members who haven't completely moved with the times. Hence why they didn't get the full amount required to overturn the policy, I suspect.

They will come eventually into this day and age, kicking and screaming.

But why are they against women joining, what are the objections? are they concerned that there will be high heel marks on the greens or endless chatter in the bar?

To clarify, women play at Muirfield, attend the clubhouse as guests, but cannot be members [not saying I have a view on that, just stating the facts]. As for the disparity in prize money, I feel it is utterly justified until the womens game attracts global audiences on a par with the mens game, ask the sponsors.

Calm down everyone...

Peter Alliss is here to clear it all up for us:

Alliss, one of the most distinctive voices in golf, told BBC Radio 5 Live: “The women who are there as wives of husbands, they get all the facilities. If somebody wants to join, well you’d better get married to somebody who’s a member.

“I believe clubs were formed years ago by people of like spirit: doctors, lawyers, accountants, bakers, butchers, whatever they like. And they joined in like spirit to talk amongst them and to do whatever. I want to join the WVS [Women’s Voluntary Service] but unless I have a few bits and pieces nipped away on my body I’m not going to be able to get in.”

That's really helpful Peter.... :21:

It's bloody ridiculous.

I mean... women playing golf? Whatever next, women doctors?

Hasn't it been proven that women's brains aren't big enough to do things that men do?

In all seriousness though...... I'm not sure there's much of a story in it.

it's their club, ergo their rules. I don't agree with it. Caroline who plays golf with us on our society days is better than most of us, but I dont think its due to ability, I think its due to men wanting a place where they can go and be with other men and feel free to talk shit without the fear of offending anyone.

If they want to be dinosaurs then let them. They've been banned from hosting The Open which is perfectly correct.

So in summary.... they are free to do what they want as its their club, and the tour have rightly banned them from hosting its major event because what they want is archaic and wrong. All sounds fair enough to me.

He's 85 JPA. The generation as I mentioned above

I know, it's just sad that as he has a 'voice' as it were, shame he couldn't use it for good rather than just reinforcing what many think of golf and golfers' attitudes.

But as Deano says, their club = their rules. Most right-thinking people will see it for what it is.

if you owned a fancy smancy romantic restaurant and that you had run for 20 years and not allowed kids in, and someone suddenly told you you had to allow kids in how would you feel?

I'm not into forcing anyone to do anything... but I agree with the decision to not host golfs major event there.

Seems reasonable to me.

We gave them the vote and look what's happened since. I mean, they are even allowed to TRY to drive these days.

:21:

(and in all seriousness, seems pathetic and small minded to me but then, as my erstwhile brother in arms deano says, they get a penalty for being that small minded in not being able to host the Open and I'd also say they've made themselves look ever so slightly stupid!)

In many way sit's just selfish. All those local businesses that will no longer benefit from holding The Open there.

I do despair when I see that nothing really seems to change in this World. Have we learnt nothing?

Of course we've learnt Heath.

One thing I've learnt is that women menstruate they attract bears. Do you really want bears on your local golf course? Really?

LOL. We have several lady members, and I can assure you, most of them no longer menstruate!!!

Golf is a load of old crap played by pretentious dickheads who think playing it makes them socially desirable to other equally deluded spunk bubbles.
