Moving to Spain

I need some advise. My partner is Spanish and her parents have offered us rent free accommodation in a property that's not being used in Villanueva de Cordaba. I would love to pack my bags and go but I haven't a clue how I would earn money. Unemployment is high over there so I can't see anyone employing me.

Any ideas?

Have you any skills that you can use to start a business? Would your partner have work to go too, or would it be both of you out of work?

You could open a restaurant selling pie-ella and tapas. The Spanish seem to go for that stuff. Either that or you could offer to form a government for them. They don't seem to be very good at that.

Being serious for a moment, there's always the possible implications of Brexit.
Also, for all the sun etc, you mightn't actually like it. Would the in-laws be on for your going down for a month to suss it out? You could also check out the employment prospects.

Heath makes a good point. I would go and join a class here and at least get a base of some of the language before you move out their.

Ofcourse the language there will be more complex than what you learn here however at least it will give you a start

I came to Norway 17 years ago not being able to speak Norwegian but with the intention of learning. The big issue was responsibilites, I really had none, or rather very little to keep me in the UK so I took a step out into the unknown. It worked out ok for me but that's far from the case for many. If you go, expect it to be tough at times and when it is, don't let it get you down. If you're determined then you will be able to make a go of it and as the years pass it will get better and easier until one day you will visit the UK and realise that your life is no longer there, somewhere else is now home.

Have a look at these.

Also been reading stuff by a guy called James Altucher. He has an interesting take on multiple streams of income. I'm putting together a few things based on his newsletters. He's got a number of books online and they are 99p if you search them out.

There's an online site called Udemy. I'm doing a course called The Complete Digital Marketing Course. Managed to get it for £15 from £99. It's very good. You could use it to set up a small business setting up web sites and marketing for businesses over there. It's got all the steps and processes that you could duplicate.

Hope that helps. It's something I've been looking at for a while.

My experience was very similar. I was 25 when I came here. I arrived without a plan and €2,000 to my name.

I could do it then because I didn't have any responsibilities or commitments.

I'm not sure about Sasky.

I guess if all else fails, you could shave your head and get loads of forearm tattoos and just walk around the town throwing plastic chairs and singing about WW2. I know there isn't that much money in hooliganism anymore but at least it's an honest living.

Thanks for the comments. I've worked in the care industry for years and recently qualified as a hypnotherapist. I could probably set up a clinic in Malaga where more people speak English but it's 3 hours drive away.
I'm a keen carp fisherman and I'm looking at maybe guiding service for British anglers who travel to Spain on the search of big carp. I would supply the equipment bait transport and advise. Just an idea at the moment.
Anyone good at doing websites?

I'd love to move to sunnier climbs but must admit, learning a new language for me wouldn't be an option, my brain is too worn out and memory is bang out of order these days!

Dont know the full aspect of what you went through Fear but I do think you could surprise yourself.

As a general comment from what I have always heard is being around a language all the time is the quickest way to learn. A recommendation made to me was rather than spend X hundreds of dollars to learn spanish in classes I should just fly to one the central, south american or certain carribean countries for two weeks and learn that way. So you pay some family or guy and you stay with them and a learn for a few weeks.

Anyway what I am getting at is if OP commits to moving he'll pick it up eventually but obviously will get there much quicker if he is committed to the language.

Nah, the wires don't cross right in my old noggin, trying to retain info is not easy at all, I used to have a near as damn it photographic memory. Now I have a pen and paper and write loads of reminders :3:

Plenty of sunny places who speak properly though.

I say properly, I mean English obviously :19: :19:

Carp Fishing in Spain . Sounds like something out of Alan Partridge.

Are you codding? This is not the plaice to disrespect fishing in Spain mate, surely not? Alan Partridge was too shellfish to take seriously anyway.

Seriously dude, there's one prawn every minute, I might just be feeling a bit crabby but this really did make me want to roe with you.

(I'm so very very sorry everyone :17: )
