Most fans at Wembley

I saw this:
https://www.theguardian.com/football/2009/may/24/millwall-scunthorpe-league-one-play-off

And it made me think about the amount of 'fans' we took there beautiful and inaugural St. Thommo's Day. It was 50,000+ for sure. Does anyone know exactly how many?

I realise that the article is about the new Wembley, and I'm imagining that we didn't hold the record for the old Wembley because the capacity used to be so much bigger. It must have been the most any club took to the old Wembley once the capacity had been reduced to 80,000...

Anyway, someone (sorry, can't remember who!) found an excuse to post this picture and now I have too!thommo.jpg

Gills v Man City in 1999 , I think holds the division 1 play off final , record attendance.
Over 77,000. I might of course be wrong.

No, you misunderstand, valencia (could make a sarcky comment here but wont! ;) ).

I'm talking about the number of fans from one club. It was definitely a bigger attendance for the City game but the following year Wigan failed to sell much of their allocation and so we got extra. Our support stretched wound more than half the stadium. Has that ever happened before? I expect it must have...

We had around 35k v City's 42k in 1999.
Against Wigan , they had around 7k , so we had way more than 40k. Everybody and their gran were there.

I think the overall attendance vs Wigan was 53,000 IIRC? So I’d say 43-45,000 Gills. I’m pretty sure Millwall took something like 49,000 to the new Wembley, but our efforts are decent too(y)

It’s a shame our base support seems to be scraping 4K now.

I think I read somewhere that Gills had a record number of fans for a Wembley final at the old Wembley for the Wigan match. That was because FA Cup and League Cup matches always had a large number of tickets allocated by the FA and League so there were always a lot of neutrals there at those finals. That didn’t happen for the playoffs so more tickets went to the clubs involved. Wigan sent a lot of their tickets back that went to Gills fans. The result was that we occupied more than half of the ground which was unique.
