'That's not Marcus Edwards, that's Messi' - Fans rave about this goal against Manchester United

Tottenham Hotspur fans have been going wild again for teenager Marcus Edwards after he scored a sensational goal against Manchester United.

The 18-year-old opened the scoring against the Red Devils with a fantastic run and curling finish into the top left corner during Spurs' 3-0 victory in the Premier League 2 at Stevenage FC on Friday night.

Edwards, known as 'Mini Messi' around Tottenham's training ground, has only made the one senior appearance for Tottenham - a 15 minute cameo from the bench in the League Cup against Gillingham last season.

Injury disrupted his season after that and then negotiations over his first professional contract rumbled on for months before he finally signed his new deal this summer.

However this goal below, captured by Spurs fan Chris Cowlin on Friday night, showed what all the fuss is about and Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino was watching on from the stands.

And here is what the fans have been saying about the youngster;

All in the timing imo. Players seem to gain a level of confidence in reserve/youth football against guys their own age that doesn't always translate well to senior football. I think bringing him on from the bench in away games might be the best start for him, the Lane would have been an ideal place to start blooding him in but could imagine Wembley being daunting on its own for debuting youngsters. Certainly don't see the harm in some minutes for him, we desperately need more options in the final third of the pitch.

.....and rejecting loan deals to fight for his first team place.

Brave or stupid, I like the brave part.

Marcus does it again...

Mauricio Pochettino has explained to football.london why Marcus Edwards is not in his first team plans at Tottenham Hotspur right now despite the clamour from the fans.

The 18-year-old has scored a series of wonderful goals for the club's development side this season and the Spurs boss was there to see him net a curling effort against Manchester United earlier this month in the Premier League 2.

However, his cameo from the bench last season against Gillingham in the then EFL Cup is the only action he has seen for the first team, with an ankle injury and tonsil surgery keeping him out of action for a spell last season and he never forced his way back into the manager's thoughts.

That is despite the Argentine comparing him to a young Lionel Messi last year and starting all the hype around the teenager.

Pochettino's press conference: Every word said on Marcus Edwards, signing Sergio Aguero & more

When football.london asked Pochettino if Edwards would play against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup at Wembley on Tuesday night, his answer was clear.

"No, Marcus no, will not be involved tomorrow in the first team," he said, before adding that other young academy players could be involved. "Maybe players like Tashan [Oakley-Boothe] will have the possibility to play because he will be involved in the squad tomorrow."
Marcus Edwards in action for Spurs' development side

Pochettino explained to us why Edwards - nicknamed 'Mini Messi' around the club - had fallen out of the limelight since his bright cameo against the Gills.

"Last season was difficult for him. Remember he was injured and then he had an operation and I think it was a tough season for him," said the Tottenham boss.

"He dropped a little bit but it’s normal after nearly one season that he didn’t play. Now he’s building his confidence again. We’re so happy because he played very well against Manchester United and then in the UEFA Youth League he was very good.

"But I think we need to wait a little bit for him to build more his physical condition and his confidence. He’s better playing in the Under-23s or the Youth Cup than staying with us, maybe on the bench.

"I think it’s a situation we have under control and we are looking after him to try to again have the facility to be involved with the first team. But it’s step by step."

Think we are missing a trick here. We need a AM type player now not later in the season. As we once again failed to get that guy in Poch needs to grow a pair and try something different instead of relying on Alli and Eriksen to do everything.

Agree RD, it's much easier for a talented youngster to come in a very good team than a poor/average one. I'm sure they'd relish playing alongside top quality players, I'd be all for giving Edwards a game here and there. Shame he ain't playing tomorrow.

He played against Swansea at Stevenage last night, from a scout who attended last night his comments to me this morning was that he was a periperhal figure, didn't do much, was easily bounced off the ball when challenged and he generally thought he's a long way away from PL standard.

He's got to be the most over hyped kid we've ever had !

No surprise if he never kicks a ball for the first team.

Like all young lads, he's got a lot to prove.

I stil mainatain that getting them out on loan to toughthen them up mentally as well as physically, if done carefully is the way to go.

Would Alli be the player he is without doing his time at MK? I seriously doubt it.

A couple of seasons worth of loans, might transform his prospects for top-flight football.

Poch's interview basically said he's gone backwards due to not really playing for a year. That can be the difference between stepping up or never making it IMO, v unlucky if that ends up being the case.

Similar to Pritchard that the injury came at a terrible time for his development
