Millers in international action 2021/22

22/03/22

JFF Official website - Wes Harding, has not been selected for the Jamaica squad. They can no longer qualify for the World Cup finals anyway. No ex-Millers have been selected either.

So it looks like only Ferguson, Ogbene and Kayode could be in action in the international break.

Friendly (k.o. 1915)
Luxembourg v N. Ireland
FERGUSON played whole game, no goals/"assists", not booked

Watched the whole game in my local WMC. N. Ireland scored an early goal, but then were a bit of a "Warney" tacticaly... sat too deep, had wide players playing, but kept booting the ball up the middle, put everybody back in their own penalty area for set pieces... guess how Luxembourg equalised?

In the end Luxembourg tired a bit and conceded a couple of late goals. Because of the tactics used, Ferguson was not involved in the game much, although he put in some good crosses. He was played too deep to have any shots at goal. Although he got chopped down a couple of times in the first half, he was up again ok and played the full game with no sign of injury.
HT : 0-1
FT : 1-3

Friendly (k.o. 1700)
Rep. Ireland v Belgium
OGBENE played whole game ,scored one, one "assist", not booked
HT :1-1
FT : 2-2

Playing wide upfront in a 3-4-3 formation seems to suit Chieo more than 3-5-2 with the Millers - maybe we should try that?
It was a good performance from him, although the opposition were mainly Belgium Reserves. The Irish Times rated him as Man of the Match.

Seen highlights - great overhead-kick goal from Ogbene and good cross for second goal. Let's hope that we see more like that from him for the Millers!

I think he was given Man of the Match at the ground too.

European Nations League and CONCACAF Nations League have fixtures scheduled for the first week in June. No news about possible call-ups for the Millers international stars yet. Think Kayode may now be too old for Rep. Ireland U-21 squad (?) and not sure if N. Ireand U-19 have any fixtures in early June (McGuckin is still under nineteen years old though)

JJ turned 22 at the start of the month so I think he might be too old too, Mike. Though, I don't know what the dates are for being able to be included. Maybe if June counts as last season he might still be eligible as he was 21 then.

Chieo Ogbene is in Rep. Ireland squad. Next game is v Armenia away on Saturday 4th June.
Doesn't look like Shane Ferguson is in the N. Ireland squad - he may still be recovering from injury (?).
Ciaran McGuckin has been promoted to the the N. Ireland U-21 squad . Next fixture is v Spain U-21 at home on Friday 3rd June.

Next Rep. Ireland U-21 fixture is v Bosnia-H. U-21 is on 3rd June. [EUFA U-21 Championship Qual. ] Age limit might have been based on date when current season started.
So looks like three Millers in upcoming international action.

Sadly, I don't see him featuring for us next season. The days of Trevor Francis playing for Birmingham at 16 and scoring 15 goals in 22 games are probably long gone and Pele wouldn't have played in a World Cup at 17.

Somebody must have seen something they like in him in the N Ireland set-up - seems strange some of our younger players are playing for their countries before the team, but, that's football these days I suppose.

It was "Boys against men". McGuckin hardly got a touch of the ball. Spain missed quite a few first-half chances, but made up for those misses in the second half'.

Poor result for Rep. Ireland. Lots of possession, but only two attempts on target. Ogbene missed a good chance to score with a header, just before half-time, but he still received the "Man of the Match" award from the FAI.
