I went out to the shops for an hour and when I came back in, I find that there may have been a military coup in Turkey!
Right now, there are conflicting reports about whether it has been "successful" or whether the coup leaders may end up being arrested.
This development will surely test Boris Johnson's mettle.

A group within Turkey's military has attempted to overthrow the government and security forces have been called in to "do what is necessary", Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Friday.
"Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command," Yildirim said in comments broadcast by private channel NTV.
"The government elected by the people remains in charge. This government will only go when the people say so."
Those behind the attempted coup would pay the highest price, he added.
However, a statement from Turkish military claims that they have overthrown Erdogan and taken control of the country.

After hearing this tonight it didnt take Mrs Melon long to tell me that she was right not to want to go to Turkey this summer for holiday. Been there two of the past three years. We go to a small town, not too touristy on south west coast. The people are lovely and so friendly. Really hope things dont get too bad although watching the news as i type it doesn't look good.

Two of our grandchildren were on holiday there until earlier this week. I'm glad they're back!

Erdogan calls the people to take to the streets
(as he leaves by private jet)

time for BoJo to fire up another w*nker limerick

He will be writing it as we speak MON

It will go something like this. Rap along

Now I'm Boris and I'm in charge
I'm much better than Nigel Farage,
I like to make people laugh
I play the fool
Now tell me if I'm wrong
However Turks are just not cool
I supposed I better be nice to their president
Oops sorry, I forgot ''he's been kicked out of his residence''

Not bad for an on the spot

Anybody have a clue what is going on. I don't know much about Turkey other than the president is a hard ass who has been clamping down on his opposition and free speech. Is the opposition secular and moderate or hardline and religious?

I flew through there last Monday morning. It's an unremarkable airport with the exception that someone attacked it recently.

If it's a a coup backed by the US no doubt 'peace keeping forces' will be sent in by them. If it isn't, the US will send in troops to make the region a safer place. The European Union will then welcome Turkey in with open arms resulting in no new refugee crisis but a free movement of people's within the union.
