Midlands Independence?

Vital Football Legend
I was listening to a football podcast and they had a guest on who has written a book about football in the North-East. He talked about the culture in the North-East and how part of the issue with Mike Ashley and Alan Pardew at Newcastle is that the North-East feels their culture diverging from London's culture. They feel that Britain is overly focused on London and they are not represented. He also said that the most influential politician in Britain is Thatcher.

We can all see what's happening in Scotland and even if the vote is no, Scotland's relationship with the UK is changing.

It seems to me that the issues in the North-East are very similar in the Midlands and the Midlands' manfacturing culture has been thrown under the bus by 35 years of Thatcherism.

So...would you vote for an independent Midlands?

LOL what and let us run ourselves with yamyam folk like me having a say on important life changing maters? PMSL good luck if we do ffs lol

I'd not throw away yhe idea of more devolved power without serious concideration and debate but full independance? I really don't see the point and believe that it would cause more problems than it could ever hope to resolve.

Anyone wanting independance for the Midlands should watch Passport to Pimlico.

People complain about a lack of manufacturing jobs in the UK, but it's a global market and unless workers are prepared to take a 90% pay cut to compete with workers in china/India/etc there's nothing any government can do

Us Black Country gentry already have indepence we have our country governed by our elected Prime Minister Sir Lenny Henry.

They can lower our cost of living to be more in line with those countries, we pay more tax than most on pretty much everything, last time I checked we were the largest contributors to Europe, our gov screws us left right and centre, it's a knock on effect, we'll take 90% less income, if cost of living drops by 90% and if the gov takes 90% less off us!

Sounds fair to me.

Then we could compete.

Britain could tell the EU to sod off, put huge tariffs back on foreign goods and have British manufacturers serve the domestic market. This was how the world worked for hundreds of years before the 1980s.

Norway still does this on some good. Oddly they do it on cars, it's odd as there is no car manufacture in Norway.

We could have subsidised instead of closed down industry under thatcher et al.

The social cost of the loss of our manufacturing industries I would guess is just as high as the cost of subsidising. We also didn't need to nationalise all the industries that we did, they could have been modernised as they have been privately but instead of going to shareholders it could have helped fund the country massively.

We could also have set up and subsidised, to counter the cheap wages abroad, TV, video and all technology that followed companies and really played on the buy British, keep our workers working.

Ironically China is Jaguar Land Rovers biggest money spinner . A midlands company owned by Indians and selling Range Rovers to China .
