Melon's all new tv thread

Melon Donkey

I am a little bit perplexed
Good evening all.
Rather disappointingly :4: the lounge tv has packed up this evening. After an oscar winning show of exasperation infront of Mrs Melon things have settled and discussions have started on replacing the tv ( which i have been suggesting for some time but falling on deaf ears)
Thought i would tap into the vast knowledge of my fellow villans. The one just broken is standard HD set so will be looking at 4k and going much larger in screen size. Curved or not?, Led or Oled?, recommendations?. I dont think i will get away ( not sure i want to anyway) with spending more than a grand.

Always gone for Samsung myself. John Lewis do the old 5 year guarantee thing. Your call.

Luckily for you Natalie still hasn't cancelled her Which.co.uk membership.

Looking at TV's between 51"-55" under £1,200, pretty much all the 'Best Buys' seem to be Samsung.

Here's the list and 'rating' for you on their most recently tested TV's -

Samsung UE55KS7000 - 76%
Samsung UE55KU6510 - 73%
Samsung UE55KU6500 - 73%
Samsung UE55KU6670 - 73%
Samsung UE55K5500 - 71%
Samsung UE55K5510 - 71%
Samsung UE55K5600 - 71%

I remember starting a thread ages ago about tvs.

Think it was heathfield said the 4k were unbelievable. I wasn't convinced they could be that much better than HD so he said go to a shop and look (I'd seen a nice tv on groupon you see... Deano found me a better one, I said don't be stupid I don't want to spend that much)

Went to the shop and had spent far more than Deano had suggested...

Saw the 4k... heathfield was right.

Saw the curved and could not believe how good it was.

My tv blows me away all the time with the beauty of the picture.

Samsung - Curved -

DO IT!

All the ones I posted above are all 4K

If you're bothered about curved then it's the 3 that start UE55KU.

The others are 4K but flat.

All are under £1,200

Honestly the curved are just beauties Melon... think you'd agree Deano?

If you are quick mate, secret sales by a total coincidence, have a sale on for Samsung

I have a Samsung and a LG.

The Samsung has been very unreliable the LG hasn't.

I'm told by a customer of mine who is a specialist in video technology that the best TV around at the moment is the OLED LG but I'm unsure on the price.

I have 3 Samsung and 1 LG, so have experience of both as well. None have let me down, and on of the Samsung's is very old.

I would say, the LG is quite slow. It takes a long time to start, and the menus take an age to come up, even the TV Guide. The Samsung is much quicker.

If I was buying a new one now, it would be a Samsung.

Cheers so far all Interesting, particularly r.e the curve models as I thought they might be a bit gimmicky and would die a death but sounds like they are impressive.
Samsung also proving popular, I have an LG sound bar so I may get more out of that with a compatible LG t.v. The Oleds seem to be mega expensive but do get rave reviews.

I will need to go and have at look at some this weekend to get an idea aswell though. Particularly with the curved as I had kinda put myself off them from reading stuff online, but.............

lol heath, yes. Do you remember the conversation? You said go out and look, that is the only way you will be convinced.

Melon, if you can afford it, honestly, no gimmick at all, you almost feel like you are in the picture the curved ones are so good.

Yes, I remember it very well. I'd not long had my LG 4k TV, and was amazed at the jump from Full HD. It's particularly important the bigger the screen, where you start to see deformation at lower resolutions.

It's a lesson to us all. I'm always right and never wrong. :12: :12: :12: :12: :12: :12: :13: :13: :13: :13: :64:

Well Buddy said it was the finest Thomas The Tank Engine he'd ever seen, so I don't really think you can get more of a glowing endorsement than that.

Ha, high praise from the little Buddy Man...! It transfixed him for all of 2 minutes didn't it?!?!

Well bloody hell. I have only come home tonight to find the family sat around watching the supposedly broken tv!. Apparantly it just switched on fine. Work that one out.

Still, clearly its on its way out so all the tips won't go to waste, and it will give me a bit more time to find the right one.

Its been a strange week.

Not sure if that is good or bad news to be honest!

I'm leaning towards bad because you have to get one of these beauties!

Oh its bad news. I want a new tv. Even more now since i have done some serious looking. Its just more difficult to justify to mrs melon when the current one is working!. This is a temporary set back.
