I decided to make this thread for anyone to discuss any medical complexities if they wish too.
Also because I toyed with where to put the post I am about to write about. I decided the really interesting wasn't over appropriate and whilst it is to do with being overweight, I didn't think the great fat thread was appropriate either.
The reason for that was because it could be perceived as trying to make excuses for being overweight.
So why this post; here goes.
Mr KK was diagnosed with NAFLD also known as NASH in January, though NASH is more serious. NAFLD stands for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease NASH stands for Non Alcoholic Steato Hepatitis (NASH)
At the time we were told because of the amount of medication he was on and him being diabetic type 1 insulin dependent. Also with him being 3 stone overweight.
He was told to lose weight. He went on the same weight loss program as me and lost a stone in 2 weeks. He then put it back on in a week, which is pretty impossible unless you are eating 50 thousand calories a day which I know he wasn't.
We spoke to the Dr about it who ran blood tests and was going to look at other things as the under active thyroid came back O.K.
Mr KK has alot of health problems. He was 21 tablets a day plus insulin and additional prescribed P.K's as needed. The irony was that medication had been the main part of him developing NAFLD/NASH they gave him another 2 tablets to help counteract the damage.
He hadn't been right for months and we were all concerned about his memory. I was starting to wonder if Mr KK was developing alzheimer's disease like Mom had. Damn scary.
Anyway the hospital stay at least bought what was happening to a head.
To cut it short, the nasty chest infection also gave him a flare up of cellulitus (swollen legs)
What we didn't know as he was given a full service/MOT in hospital with scans and so on, was that he also was retaining alot of water. From this they have also changed his daily pain killers for the 3 types of arthritis and slipped discs.
His notes contained the words heart failure, which nearly gave me that when I seen it. It wasn't explained to us properly in hospital and we were just told it was a generic term when the heart has to work overtime and not to worry about it.
It turns out that the reason heart failure was on his notes, was because of the water retention which had been building for sometime. He really should have been given the water tablets earlier because of the cellulites problems when he was last in with it.
The water retention was causing the confusion (Thank God he is back to ''normal'' now) and was also part of causing the NAFLD/NASH.
Now he is home in 3 weeks of being on the water tablets which he will be on for life, he has lost 18 lb/1 stone and 4 lb, most which is water retention.
Massive relief. Damn right scary that something that doesn't sound a massive problem can be.
We expect him to lose weight normally (1 lb or 2 a week) now however it is damn scary to know something so simple can be silently killing you.
With the weight loss as he still needs to lose 1 and a half stone and the water tablets the diagnosis should start to repair and if not, not get any worse.
Fortunately our hospital are keeping him on check ups and doing further regular scans to see how things are
