Manuel Pellegrini's recent team selection at Chelsea saw an upsurge in anti City propaganda across the media. Only our team's fine win in Kyiv staved off deeper condemnation.

The bitterness has been there for years now and has bubbled under during our many successes, but as the club marches on regardless and media darlings Liverpool and United continue to fail, the criticism of all things City from hacks and TV Panel pundits alike has intensified. It is as if BBC, BT and Sky in particular have declared open season on us.

The absence of any balance in much of the reporting makes for very poor quality coverage for those of us who love sports journalism because as the protaganists leap on any negativity they can where we are concerned, they go totally over the top whenever Liverpool or the rags win a football match. Both clubs having won only 7 games in their last 20. But despite the poor teams they beat, you would think City with a better record are the crisis club.

So if you need to offload as we enter the business end of the season, this is the thread for you!

The Guardian team of writers have really gone after us this season. Here's Barry Glendenning the Sunderland fan giving us a good panning in the 10 things to look out for this weekend article...

1) A motivated Manchester City that are up for the Cup?

In the space of just four days, we have seen the very best and very worst of Manchester City’s attitude towards cup competitions. First they hoisted the white flag against Chelsea before their FA Cup fifth round tie even started. After that embarrassment, an unrecognisable City side all but secured their passage to the quarter-finals of the Champions League with an imperious performance against Dynamo Kyiv. Quite how they’ll treat the Capital One Cup final on Sunday afternoon is anyone’s guess, but despite its dwindling prestige and apparently increasing pointlessness, in a world where actually playing competitive football seems a massive imposition on the time of high profile teams with far more important commercial concerns to worry about, they might as well go all out to win it. “If you’ve come this far, maybe you’re willing to go a little further,” wrote Andy Dufresne to his friend Red in The Shawshank Redemption. With a couple of more important irons in the fire, City’s manager and players might not be too fussed about the outcome of the kick-about to decide the eventual destination of this particular bauble. Here’s hoping that’s not the case, as Liverpool will certainly be going all out to win it and against similarly motivated opposition an absolute belter of a ding-dong Cup battle could well ensue. It's not anyone's guess Glendenning you bellend. City have arguably treated the League Cup with more respect than any other club since Pellegrini took the job, a quick look back through selected XIs in this competition verifies this.
 
The BBC did themselves no credit with their display last weekend. Shearer's peremptory going off the deep end before the team sheets had even been shown followed shortly afterwards by Le Saux dropping the first mention of 'disrespect' pitch side a few minutes later demonstrated an editorial bias that beggared belief. An expectation of unbiased, impartial comment is not unreasonable IMO. That it so infrequently is delivered is a damning indictment of the sort of shallow 'mates down the pub' atmosphere which permeates most football show studios - pandering to the masses and their prejudices to be swallowed hook, line and sinker by those less prepared to at least consider an alternate view.

With a wider lens it could perhaps have been noted that the Premier League does NOT have an automatic right to the Champions League qualifying place currently awarded to the 4th place in the league. Such has been the lack of success of English clubs in the competition in recent years that the lot is at significant risk of being lost to other domestic European leagues especially Italy. With Arsenal requiring a miracle in Spain and Chelsea's progress unassured at this time some recognition of the dilemma facing City AND the PL might not have gone amiss.

But we suffered a narrow, shallow and limited view led by an ex-pro who suffered from the usual amnesia of forgetting that he had, as BD pointed out on the 'Disrespect' thread, previously complained at the impact of players trying to perform at the top of their game every thre/four days. Hypocrisy at it's most vivid.

I seriously hope we can stuff their words back down where the sun doesn't shine. There is enough motivational material flying about that VK will have plenty to draw on come Sunday
 
Agreed Blues. I think the BBC having made Chelsea v City their flagship cup match made an editorial decision to pillory City. Whats grating on me is all our injuries get dismissed as so what they have a big squad but its a crisis at the rags.
 
Best not get me started on the injury front.

The standard comments are "with the squad that City have" and "they have two players for every position" with shocking disregard for the fact that EVERY PL club has a squad that is limited to 25 players. This can be augmented by those U21 but essentially it is a level playing field and no matter what the quality of those not selected if they are injured no manager can rotate with the same confidence.

This weekend may be the first time ALL SEASON that Pellegrini has the ability to select any of the eight players in his defensive unit. In all the blathering about "how poor City have been defensively" not one of the pundits has ever pointed out that the constant pick'n'mix at centre back has been almost wholly dictated by the frequency with which one or more of the four CBs has been injured at the same time. That kind of disruption is very difficult to manage and has in no small way IMO been responsible for the porous nature of our defence.

But that would require some depth to their analysis, something which sadly only someone like Gary Neville used to provide. Never thought I would say it but his insight is sadly missed.

It appears that BBC haven't got Sunday's events out of their system yet as they light up the journalistic landscape with another character assassination piece by the berk that is Chris Sutton. His twisted logic is tortuous and completely off base if you ask me.

Not a fan of Mr Mills - even when he played for us I wanted him to be shit. Not as bad as Bowyer (Lee not Ian) and certainly not as dislikable as Wise (Dennis not Ernie).

 
On the 21st of February, I joined a discussion on Twitter regarding the Chelsea game, injuries, and the Cup final involving Simon Mullock of the Sunday Mirror, and Martin Lipton, of the Sun?

Lipton - 'That's why you have a squad. Nobody allowing injuries as excuse for Utd'
Me - 'Disagree. On Saturday's Football Focus, a graphic was shown with a 'United Injured XI''
Lipton - 'Show me any newspaper giving Utd that excuse'

This looks like an excuse to me claiming they have an injury "curse" which is code for "it's not their fault, look at the scale of their injury problems"....

Here's one in relation to player fatigue.....

Sunday Supplement today and there was much debate about fixture congestion Custis (the S*n) was banging on and dismissive of players struggling to cope with games every 3-4 days (citing Shearer :019: ) only for Andy Dunn to comment on how fresh the Leicester players would have been yesterday after having not played for two weeks.

....and that, in a nutshell, sums it up.

The bias will make you sick as the rags hero Rashford should have been sent off for a clear handball on the line. The BBC says "he cleared it off the line" when it was obvious he threw his arm out to block it.

I'm also interested to see how they approach Everton's new sugar daddy who is an Iranian businessman.
 
Thanks for that information. I'll certainly bear that in mind, or even maybe reply to him even though it's a week since the original conversation....
