Mcafee anti virus

Does anyone use it? I have it on my laptop and it's completely shit, it's using up so much CPU it's makes my laptop almost unworkable (I'm currently on my iPhone instead). I ran a test and it flagged up mcafee as an extreme warning or something because the CPU usage was so much last time I was on my laptop it was using 77% (it sometimes goes even higher around 90% at times) and that's just the primary service there's other mcafee things using up CPU as well. Then when I'm on the internet my laptop is on 100% CPU and is like a computer from the 90's it's so slow...

Does anyone else have or had this problem with any anti virus software and is there a way to fix it without risking the security of my laptop?!

I use Norton and CCleaner and have no problems with slowing down etc. Are you sure its McAfee slowing you down, or could be something else?

I have NORTON and i have slowing down issues sometimes not all the time though, i never had McAfee trouble when i used to use it years ago, sometimes as GT says other things slow your laptop down i can't find out what slows mine down though lol

We use AVG. There is a free version too. You don't have to pay for the add on's unless you want too. The free version is just as good.

We have been with AVG a number of years now and I wouldn't recommend anything else.

My son who works in IT recommended it. His words 'McAfee & Norton now were rubbish'

Have you defragged it Clive? That is something so many people forget about and is so important

If you use Crome, click on the 3 lines at the end of the search bar, then click on tools, then click on extensions - turn em off, this can speed things up a bit.

Uninstall McAfee and install Microsoft Security Essentials.

It's free, and I have always found it more than enough.

Yes I usually have task manager open too see the CPU level when it's running slow, it's a mixture of mcafee and the internet, whenever I'm online mcafee will jump up to anywhere up from 20% - 90% CPU usage plus then il have chrome wanting to use 50+% and altogether my laptop will be on 90% minimum

Pay for anti-virus? Not for me.

(MoneyWatch) Using up-to-date anti-virus software is the cornerstone of computer security, not to mention simple common sense. Or perhaps not. A recent study by security research firm Imperva startlingly concludes just the opposite: Anti-virus software is so universally ineffective that it's just a waste of money.

In the study, which was conducted by the University of Tel Aviv in Israel, 40 anti-virus products were tested against 80 fresh, uncatalogued threats from malicious software code. What percentage of this malware did the anti-virus technology initially detect? Nearly zero.

Loads of people work in IT. Loads have different views on all sorts of softare. Norton is fantastic and has picked up countless awards.

I work in IT, have no particular favourite. I always say to my customers that internet security is like the lock on your front door, you have to have faith that it is going to do the job for you, if you don't have faith then it needs changing. Personally I don't see a need to pay for anti-virus as the solution I use has worked well for me. Just a note though, I see just as many computers infected with bought solutions such as Norton as I do the free one's such as Avast.

I should add, if you look at porn, if you download illegally, if you enjoy endless circular funny e-mails spammed around the web then there is an extremely high risk that your computer is infected. it is that simple.

Suppose you go with the ones that have done the job for you. I regularly scan, I'm regularly free from virus infections. That said, I'm also careful what I click, where I go and what I open via emails, so might just be good housekeeping!
