Captain Chris Maxwell was quick to apologise to the fans after Blackpool fell to a 5-0 defeat at Peterborough United.

The loss, which ended a strong season back in the Sky Bet Championship on a sour note, was uncharacteristic of the campaign as a whole, yet hurt nevertheless.

“I would like to apologise to the fans. I’ve been very public in talking about it all season, I believe our fans are absolutely fantastic and the best fans I’ve played in front of in my career,” he said.

“We were not at the races today and the support that they showed after the game was phenomenal.

“As captain of this football club, which I am completely honoured to be, I have to say that I’m really upset with the result and really upset with everybody’s performance. It’s put a sour taste in our mouths for the six-week break.

“For me, who often dwells on performances and is desperate to win every single game, every single training session and every single thing I participate in, it hurts me well and truly. All I can do is apologise for that.

“It takes a shine off what has been a successful season that has laid a foundation for next season.

“There was no hiding place out there today. Credit to Peterborough because they did play well, but it was made a lot easier from our performance, and I think that is the first time since I’ve been here that it’s happened.”

Unfortunately this doesn't sound like he won't be here next season...

Chris Maxwell is determined to help Blackpool climb the table next season after finishing the Championship campaign in 16th. The Seasiders secured a comfortable mid-table campaign despite losing 5-0 to Peterborough United on the final day.

It was an afternoon to forget for the Seasiders but that doesn't detract from a largely successful campaign. Unlike Posh, Neil Critchley's side will be playing second-tier football next season.

Maxwell has started the last eight matches for Blackpool after a four-month absence. The battle for the number one shirt with Daniel Grimshaw will be an intriguing one throughout pre-season.

"Just improve on this season, improve on this season," Maxwell stated when asked his ambitions. "Whether that's through performance, points or table position we've all got to look to improve both as a group and as individuals.

"This season and the experiences are worth their weight in gold and hopefully we'll use that to our advantage."

Whilst being out of the team through injury, Maxwell has been coaching the youth team. Although at 31 there are no plans to retire soon, he's enjoying the new experiences.

"Doesn't feel like it today. Yeah of course, it's learning, I learn every day whether it's coaching or listening to the manager or the staff here because we've got fantastic knowledge in the staff and I'm desperate to learn anything. Any chance to learn is a chance to get better."
