Match Thread: Wigan Athletic v Lincoln City

Yes, Brian Heward went to Australia in the summer of 1964, played for a club there called Bankstown, but didn't settle in Australia and was back playing for City in the autumn of the same year. And glad we were to have him, but we still had a bad season, it being the mid-1960s.

He later became chairman of the Red Imps Association and was heavily involved with local business organisations (others may remember exactly in what way)

Yes I knew Brian very well. The team he played for in Australia were based out in the western suburbs of Sydney about an hour from the city centre. Wouldn't of been as developed as it is now out there and would also of been pretty chilly in the winter months.
Brian was a very keen tennis player and was pretty good to and played well into later life.
He was also Chairman of the Lincoln branch of the Federation of Small Businesses.

i thought we got a bit lucky today and a better team than Wigan would have punished us but we battled really well for the win and with other results going our way it was a great day.

Several players look like they are running on empty but a lot of clubs are in the same boat with 3 games a week.

I was pleased TJ got a rest and he should be raring to go on Tuesday both Sanders and Poole look decent signings and will play a big part in the coming weeks.

When you are top of the league it's natural to look at what could go wrong.

But being top also means if things happen to go right you could be soon in a very healthy position.

Win the next 2 games against Swindon and Plymouth and we are on 62 points with 16 games to go, with Anderson, Morton and Scully likely to be available for something like a dozen of those. (Bridcutt and Walsh for some as well).

It's also noticeable in nearly every game we have chances with the ball at players feet inside the box. Poole 8 yards out, nutmegs defender and the ball goes just wrong side of post, Brennan 2 shots from an awkward angle about 10 yards out, Scully goal from a yard, Hopper goal from just infront of penalty spot.

Forget the XYZ coefficient of chances or whatever it is, these are good chances to score. Because of the way we play, we make them regularly.

An away game at "lowly" Wigan following a semi final defeat is a challenge... in terms of getting yourself "up" for the game.

Concede a screamer into the top corner early on and it's a recipe for disaster.

But football matches can be won in a few moments if you have quality players.

We have players that can produce those moments. Look at the highlights and the quality of Rogers and Grant, and also the right decisions of Edun and McGrandles.

The next few weeks will be hard and not everything will go our way but there is every reason to dig in and find a way to win some games.

Not everything will run smooth but there are 23 teams that would happily swap their position for ours.

Thought yesterday with Brennan the second of those two shots should have gone back to McGrandles, who was standing unmarked on the penalty spot screaming for it. That's what McGrandles seems to bring - somebody arriving just a little bit later who the ball can be pulled back to. It's how he scored the other week, and how we got we got the goal against Hull(?) when it came back off the keeper and Scully tapped it in.

Pitch looked bloody awful, wind made things difficult, Wigan guilty of plenty of rough house tactics and Trevor Kettle once again inept. I remember Imps teams of the past would feel sorry for themselves and end up on the wrong end of the result. Not this bunch, although looking dog tired they found a way to grind out 3 points. I may not have been pretty, it was however, pretty effective.

Being top means teams raise their game and clearly Wigan did that, fair play to them. Also they'd just got hammered, they were bound to raise their game

Every player arrives "a little bit later" if its Brennan that has the ball because they can't keep up with him. lol
