Two Shrewsbury Town Supporters Talk To Vital Lincoln City (Who Are Ya?):

"Just hope our decent squad can perform to the best of their ability. Expect Steve to sort out our defence. We have several players of 30 plus. We need some younger players to give us more pace all over the pitch."

Another tough one.
Not really, this now becomes a free hit.

I suspect when the management team and board sat down preseason to identify targets, making good progress in this competition will have been a priority.

But after such a good start in the league, it becomes more of a distraction in this compressed season. Like the FA Cup tie, use available squad players, rest some of the key players, they're all on-message so the likes of Howarth, Elbouzedi and Archibald ( if fit) will do a job and we have a good chance.

The 'tough games' take a break until Saturday, then we get a whole stream of them again, including Shrewsbury again next Tuesday, rather lose tonight and get 3 points then - though 2 wins ( and penalty practice?) would be nice.

Well done to Peterborough, who're charging their adult fans £18 (plus a £2.25 booking fee) to watch their first game back tonight against West Ham kids.

Mark Whiley reported we have only 14 available players for tonight due to injuries and suspension.

That may have changed in view of empty stadia. We made the bulk of our money in 2017-18 from the 40,000+ attendance at the final, and there is absolutely no guarantee that anyone will be allowed to attend this year. The final is just over 3 months away (scheduled for 14 March) - is it now worth even reaching the final when the financial rewards are likely to be severely limited? Is it worth risking a promotion challenge for? As I proposed on a different thread, the effect of a large number of matches on a small squad is visible by the closing stages of any season, let alone a compacted one like this. Quite a conundrum.

I wonder if they'll consider a double header on the final day and get around to playing last seasons still be be played final as an opener to this season's on the 14th of March

Like most clubs, Peterborough's finances are a mess. However, there are varying definitions of mess. The first warning came when they refused season ticket refunds for last season, preferring to kick the can a long way down the road by proposing discounts from 2021-22 and 2022-23 season tickets instead. MacAnthony then stated at the end of August that they had a £4m deficit from 2019-20 season, and were expecting another £4m shortfall in 2020-21 without Covid losses. Those numbers are quite incredible and explain why they were so aggrieved at (in their eyes) being denied promotion. The £10m received for Toney is being paid in instalments, and £3m of it goes to Newcastle anyway. They must be praying for promotion this season - meeting the salary cap will be an interesting exercise if not. And a new stadium is in the pipeline too - presumably they are planning to pay for that using a very large number of buttons.

Perhaps the managers can come to an agreement involving two touch football and no tackling tonight in light of all their injury concerns and an important league re-match imminent.

Maybe Cotterill will take a similar view, and focus entirely on keeping Shrewsbury in League One; and perhaps he may feel it is not worth fielding a good side against Lincoln because their home record so far suggests they are unlikely to win? Lots of variables on their side as well as ours.
