Match Thread: Lincoln City v Bury

I though we were far too light in the midfield first half. Whilst it’s great experience for Chapman he needed an enforcer in there with him. Second half I thought we were far more on it as the intensity increased.

Another tough game with plenty to work on but a very welcome 3 points.

I think it is now confirmed that it was Freck with the winner. Must be the issue with the numbers on the shirts still confusing everyone!!

The first half seemed a continuation of our Grimsby effort. Second to the ball, unable to dent the Bury defence and largely outplayed.

The second half we started brightly and forced Bury back who were clearly hoping just to keep us out. The changes worked and we pretty much dominated. I couldn't see the penalty clearly, but seemed very similar to the O'Connor decision so I'm not complaining.

After getting level and Bury losing a man the win was always on.

We need to be up for it from the start, though. we probably can't keep getting results by just turning up for 45 minutes.

Pett was excellent again. So pleased he has turned out not to be Billy Knott MkII. He's not quite Woodyard, but he gives energy in the midifield that isn't coming from anywhere else.

I’d sum up tonight’s team as ‘struggling to find an identity’.
Bury bossed the game. They seemed to be more physical and stronger, maybe bigger, in the air.
Pett Mom for me.

Bury were better from 20-45 minutes no question. They were quite happy to park the bus in the second half.

Pett's not quite Woodyard in snaffling for the ball, but he's not been bad at that and his passing is better and poses a genuine goal threat.

There's not much to him physically but he takes a lot of knocking off the ball this season, the one player who seems to have benfitted the most from a full Cowley pre-season.

BBC Sport have summed it up perfectly - "a smash-and-grab raid." Wow did we get off the hook! Lifeless, complacent and lacking in quality for 75 minutes yet somehow we still won. Got to feel sorry for Bury, who looked like a very decent team.

We've only played well in 1 out of 4 games so far, yet we've got 10 points on the board. That's a testament to the team spirit, but we do need to improve. They say that the best teams can win without playing well, but that shouldn't be a weekly occurrence!

Still think we need Bostwick in midfield rather than defence. He was really poor tonight IMO, caused lots of panic and uncertainty at the back, whereas he could have given us more physicality and control had he been in midfield. Pett, Freck and Chapman in midfield isn't particularly physically intimidating.

Also looks like we have an injury in the one position we have no cover for, at Right Back. Hopefully Eardley will have recovered in time for the weekend.

Stand up Tom Pett. You were magnificent today. Head and shoulders the best player on the pitch in a read and white shirt. He broke down play, ran past players, passed well and was every where. If he doesn’t start on Saturday there is no justice.

Feels like we played another get out of jail free card today (do we have many left?). If the old saying “things even out over the season” holds true, we’re in for some pretty rough games!

Bury dominated the first half and should have had the game sealed by half time. They were far more threatening going forward but, like us often lacked that final ball. We were much better in the second half, yet for all the possession, I couldn’t see how we’re going to score. Thankfully we were gifted another penalty. No idea if it hit his hand from my view. Even after they went down to 10 we didn’t look that comfortable and a scrappy goal wins it for us.

As good as Pett was there really were some poor performances. Although Andrade was involved in both goals I though he had a bad game. He ran in to blind alleys and played some poor balls. He had moments though which make me think there is a good player in there.

Unfortunately from what I’ve seen Toffolo, he isn’t good enough at defending. Bury were hammering our left hand side because they knew they had him. Decent going forward but a liability in defence. I think we need to play 5 at the back to give him cover and more freedom going forward.

I don’t like Bossie and Shackell at the back together, too slow in my opinion. We need to push botwisck back into the middle of the park to start breaking down play and winning the second balls. In the last two games we’ve rarely won a second ball, or even challenge for them. Moreover, we’re not pressing other teams (this may be due to the sapping weather) and allowing them far too much time and space on the ball.

The real problem is the team isn’t gelling. The players seem on different wavelengths. Passes aren’t finding thier mark and set plays have generally been poor. Things will improve with more game time and as Danny said “we’re a million miles away from where we want to be”.

Quite unbelievably we’ve managed to bag 10 points from 4 games and remain unbeaten. I’d take a result over a performance any day of the week.

All of the above. He has put in some incredible defensive performances at times but he's clearly better as a midfielder - and the midfield is better for his presence. Chapman clearly isn't ready for league football yet.

I didn’t think chapman played badly at all first half. Certainly players around him that played worse. He dwelled in the ball a bit, but got stuck in and played some nice passes. I think the match experience will do him good, it’s very different to training!

Lucky again tonight i thought we were distinctly average till the penalty.Thought Rhead offerred very little tonight ,Green was unlucky to be taken off imo.Ellis i thought was alright tonight and lacked an outlet on the left as Toffolo didnt push up much.Did we start with the wrong players tonight?
I wish we would play more to Akindes feet and not in the air as he clearly prefers it there.Liked Andrade again as he offers something different and McCartan as well.
Clearly the team is work in progress as DC said after the game but it will be blooming! good when it clicks.
Bring on Clownty!
