Match Thread Forest v Stoke City.

Isn't a bit dangerous to indulge into the 'relegation might be a positive thing' mindset?

We all remember those dire years in League 1. It wasn't a season of jaunts down to quaint little grounds where we ran away with it; it was years of misery that took ages to come back from. The financial hit would be absolutely killer if we went down, and knowing us, it would be years before we even got back in the Championship. Ultimately, you deserve relegation if you don't get enough points, and one way or another, we have.

I fully agree that this season has been pitiful and totally demoralising - but if we have a clear out, bring up Mighten and Johnson, and make a few decent signings, we could get mid-table next year. That's not something to get excited about, but it's better than being in League 1.

Welcome to the forum if you are a genuine new poster.

If you have a look at other fans forums (particularly Derby, which I have been enjoying recently) you see a lot of over-catastrophising of the financial consequences of League one. In reality it tends to be nowhere near as bad; we have seen loads of clubs in financial problems go down and there he little further worsening.

I should probably retract; yes, of course I don't want us relegated. I never want to go through that league one experience again, and should we go down we would never be the club that comes straight up; that is just not Forest.

That said, the thought of Derby going down only to pass us on their way straight back up as we suffer another miserable season does not appeal.

The reality is, we would be down this season if it weren't for Wycombe and Coventry.

And it worries me about the goals. We have such a chronic shortage of goals in this squad, and that is by far the most difficult thing to find and the most expensive thing to buy

Why Wycombe and Coventry? Coventry are above us so they haven't filled a relegation spot with Wycombe, and we aren't the only club to take points off those two this season.

In truth, whatever rebuild needs to happen can do so easier in the Championship than it can in League One. Higher division, more appeal etc. But the division is irrelevant in comparison to the ownership making the correct decisions to rebuild. On that basis I think we'd be in the shit whichever league we were in.

Because we got the double over them I think chap...and relied heavily on those points gained.

I was talking about the 12 points we took off two clubs and how transformative they have been for our season

Hugh ton has mentioned changing our style next season and this is a must in my opinion. We need to keep things tight at the back but we need to show more flair and creativity.I just hope we go out to win games rather than appear to guard our 0-0 status at the start.

Agreed, if we just started playing at a higher tempo it would be a start. We are so pedestrian in our approach play whoever we are playing has chance to get their defence set and in shape. The only chances we create are here their defence gets fed up waiting and makes a mistake out of boredom

We lose too many midfield battles because we have so little athleticism in the side. Players like Yates and Cafu are just too pedestrian to ever get a hold of the midfield. Jay from the inbetweeners has been overweight all season. It's not just raw pace we lack, we don't have agile players with a bit of dynamism to win battles and get us moving forward quickly.

I find it bizarre that Colback hasn't played more and did I miss something about Sow? Did he finally succumb to his bruised knee? What is Harry Arter doing for his 30k p/w??

I've no faith in Hughton but I'm assuming he'll get the chance to reshape the squad this summer. We need an injection of younger, energetic players with ambition asap.

I think it's also worth recognising that footballers of all clubs are not immune to the traumatic events of the last 12 months. We've no idea what their family and personal circumstances are, nor how resilient they are mentally.

Hopefully this summer will see a reset in many ways.
That is true.

But how many people get to use that as an excuse in their paid jobs? I don't.

At the top end of performance in any industry you generally expect the professional to be resistant to such things.

That's a fair point and I wouldn't be unsympathetic to specific cases, there will be 1 or 2 players that deserve a free pass. Probably those that weren't shit before covid, if we have any.

The general malaise throughout our entire squad this season has me riled up. Here's hoping Hughton can work miracles this summer.

I was inferring as such earlier. They can all have a bye as far as it goes. Football during covid was just weird, lacking atmosphere and intensity. Im not expecting more of the same.

Not just style, lets hope he changes the substance and one or two players as well.

Professional sport bears zero resemblance to every day jobs.
Different, but not zero resemblance.

You use your specialist skills and are renumerated economically for doing so.

Or are you saying that professional football is a harder job than any other available?

As ever, the players we are talking about are at the very higher end of the economic scale; the wealthier you are, the less at risk you are from a variety of the effects of COVID.

Obviously, any player who has lost someone or faced a close family being severely ill will be affected mentally for a time. Not sure how common that is likely to be

Celebrity “jobs” acting, singing, being a comedian, sports person etc reside in a different realm to normal folks’ day-to-day grind.

Put it this way, any “occupation” that requires a personal agent to represent their clients interests, image rights, contract or endorsements ain’t a “normal” person job.

As such, they’re performers and the audiances input (or lack, thereof) is part of their output.

That forests players haven’t had the energy from a crowd has probably affected the teams results.

Thanks :tophat: - I am a new poster but have been a long time reader!

100% agree about the goals. And I’m not trying to pretend that we don’t have massive problems to fix. Brennan - if we do keep him and play him - might come good, but he also might turn out like Tyler Walker. Same with Mighten, much as I like them both. Apart from them, who do we have in MF? Hopefully a fit Lolley, but Garner seems unlikely to come back and I’m not sold on getting Krov on a perm. Ameobi is kind of fine but he doesn’t really belong in a top half championship team.

What I can’t understand is, why have Freeman and Knocks turned out so badly? It can’t just be that they’re getting on a bit, can it? On paper, both seemed like great signings. But I still feel like Knocks best game was his first one as a sun against D***y. Freeman, can’t remember him having a good game.

Then you can almost lump Taylor in with the above as a signing who should’ve worked on paper, can’t you? I thought he looked good last season and was chuffed with him on a free. But when he’s played for us he mainly just seems to fall down.
